Running around downtown San Francisco?

Hi, my wife and I are traveling to SF this weekend and will be staying at the Palace Hotel on Montgomery St. Neither one of us has been to the area and I was wondering if anyone could recommend a nice area to run? We aren’t strangers to hills although probably not to the extent that SF has to offer. She’s scheduled to do 8 miles and I’m in post IM cruise mode, so just a nice moderate route would be great. Thanks.

You can run along the Embarcadero towards Golden Gate. You’ll need to get over a short and steep hill at Fort Mason to get to the Marina/Crissy Field, but otherwise it will largely be a flat run. It’s a very nice run and one I do whenever I’m in town.

Yup, if you’re gonna run from the hotel that’s the one to do. Add in the climb up to the GG bridge and at least run a few hundred yards on it (well worth the climb).

If you wanna take a bus/cab to the Marina (cabs are kinda pricey in SF…at least compared to NYC), you can start there and do both the GG bridge (across and back) and the Sand Ladder (from the Alcatraz Tri) on what will be a very hilly, 1/2 on trails 10 miler.

Either way, stop to take pictures; and consider stopping at Sports Basement (huge running/outdoor/tri store) in the Persidio with great prices.

The times that I have been there, I have just done early morning runs downtown. There is not much traffic, and it is always fun to run in a cool city that you are not very familiar with.

Had a Christmas Party at the Palace Hotel back in the dot-com hayday. I remember most of it

Follow the SF Marathon course (runsfm.com). Embarcadero up to and across the Golden Gate Bridge. Also anywhere in and around Golden Gate Park but that’s not close to your hotel. Embarcadero can get crowded, but at least you’ll get a mostly continuous run.

While you’re there why not take a swim in Aquatic Park too?

If either of you is interested in a trail run, a trip to Angel Island is quite a nice day out.

Enjoy The City!
