Runner's World article on Jenny Crain

In the most recent Runner’s World magazine, there is a long article on Jenny Crain. I just got it in the mail today, had no idea the article was in there and was just flipping through it at my daughter’s swim team practice. For some of you that don’t know her, she was a very talented runner with a 13.1 PR around 1:15 and aspirations of taking on another Olympic trials in the marathon (making it her forth trials I think). She was struck by a car while finishing up a morning run and very seriously injured. Very talented runner and the type of person that everyone loves to be around. Not having any idea the article was there, I immediately soaked up every word and was simply transfixed by the pictures. I was fighting back tears…it’s an emotional read. Those in Wisconsin / Minnesota and many around Ohio will know her and may be familiar with her story. I’m very glad to see Runner’s World run the article and do it justice with such coverage rather than a brief one-pager.

Hope you all get a chance to read it. We all have close calls from time to time on the bike or on the run and many of us develop a sense for when an idiot driver is about to make an idiot move. I’ve never been hit, but I’ve had a zillion close calls as I’m sure most of you have. The article really just makes you want to be 100% more aware and be more careful. I hope she has the best recovery possible under the circumstances. Severe brain injuries are dodgy and there is no exact science.

I ran with her at Ohio University and she was just a total blast to be around. Her team and her coaches loved her, always positive, always funny and could just go like hell when she wanted to.

I just read the article. Wow.

What a difference a couple of seconds has made to the lives of her and her family. Sometime I jump the lights a little so I don’t have to unclip. This article makes me rethink that move.
