I just moved to New York City and not having a car to throw things in kind of limits what I can carry around. Ideally for training I would like to run before 6:30 am swim practice, but because of the location of the pool I don’t have time to run back home and get to work (a job where I have to wear a suit). My dilemma is what kind of bag can I use so that I can carry my crap and run comfortably at the same time?
Gee I’m not sure. Would you have to fit your work suit in the bag? Does your pool have personal lockers you can utilize so you can leave some (I realize not all) of your daily prep things so you can minimize what you have to lug around every day?
I’m thinking a backpack in the category of a daypack with a strap that clips around your ribs to prevent the pack from bouncing would be doable. Also there are some HUGE fanny pack based (and I hate that term) packs that sit on your lower back that have BIG capacaties. That wouldn’t bouce around either and would leave your shoulders free. How would you deal with wrinkling\ironing? Could you get a dog and make it run next to you wearing a pack?
Last question…what time do you go to bed at night? I would love to run before swimming at 6:30 but I have no gas in the tank that early.
Berghaus Nytro - not sure if they still make them (mine’s about 2yrs old) but it’s the business. Fantastic compression system keeps it glued to your back and you can forget it’s there. pocket for a camelback loads of little pockets for keys etc. and a cool helmet net which folds out of the bottom and can also be used to keep a soggy towel away from papers etc. If you need something bigger I really recommend Macpac who are a NZ compnay and make a great adventure race bag which I also own. - Just found the links:

Hold on a sec… run to work with suit in bag… swim… then how do you get to work? Subway maybe?
This is what I was thinking of when I mentioned fanny packs. They are designed for trail running so maybe they have some stability:

I used to keep a week’s supply of clothes in my office. I used the dry cleaners by my office and slowly rotated clothes around.
I woudl get up at 5:30, be out the door in less than 10 minutes…this question could even apply to after work and running home…
I like the idea of finding a dry cleaners near work and just changing when I get here…but I still have to the hair dryer/make-up/wallet issue.

I guess I forgot to mention that my office had shower facilities…
