Run getting slower as IMLP taper draws close?

i have noticed my running getting slower as i near the end of my final build for IMLP. I suspect this could be normal as i have steadily upped both my running and bike mileage to all time highs but am curious if others notice this?

(btw, I live in south florida so this might also have to do with the recent increase in humidity and heat index but since I’ve only been down here since March I’m not really sure what to expect…)

PS I am SO ready to start the taper…

You’re just running and riding exhausted. Your heart rate may be a bit off too. Just wait until taper starts. 2 weeks in you’ll want to SPRINT!!! (well, with me I just wanted to dance, but you know what I mean!) Enjoy taper. You have earned it!

thanks jodi (and btw congrats on your awesome race last w/e!).

although this will be my third IM it’s the first where i have really put in serious (proper?) mileage so I appreciate your feedback.

Yeah, I felt like total hell at the end of my build! Was dying for taper. My “run” (elliptical) was what was the most screwed up. My heart rate was in the basement and I just couldn’t push it. Not sure if it’s normal, but it surely happened to me too.

Have confidence in your training, and have a great time at the race!

I hear you there. My running has slowed as well, but it’s got to be due to the last 3 weeks of peak training and pretty much being tired/sore for every workout. Oh well, one more long run tomorrow then BRING ON THE TAPER!! Can’t wait for LP!!

Mine definitely has. I’m still getting my runs in and doing the distance, but I don’t have that usual zip in my stride when I want it. I’m in NYC and it’s been hot and humid up here also. I’m convinced that’s contributing. I am also just plain friggin’ exhausted in general.

As a related side note, this did NOT happen to me during my training last year for the NYC Marathon. Obviously the amount of time spent training is different, but I was running A LOT more.

I think that another difference is that I was doing speedwork throughout the marathon training, but I haven’t been doing much (if any) in what seems like months now. I’m pretty sure I won’t be needing too much “speed” during the run portion of my first IM!

I never thought I would say this, but I totally agree and can’t wait for the taper.

Thats how I felt last year during my LP build. You are pretty much exhausted and overtraining ( I know I was). A few days off/easy should do you wonders.
