Not trying to be a rumor-monger, but heard (but UNCONFIRMED) a potential change in the bike course…
something about the Indian reservation having reservations about the bike course on the Beeline. Which means the bike course could potentially be shortened in that direction. Just FYI…
This was posted on the Crucible Fitness discussion forum:
Just got through speaking to the Race Director at IRONAZ. BIKE
COURSE CHANGE – Three loop bike course with a little more in
downtown Tempe instead of current course as outlined on IRONAZ
website. Instead of going to Shea and turning at Taco Bell - turn
at Gilbert about 6 miles short of Shea #150;for the LB contingent that
is about where I flatted on Saturday and where Anne Marie flatted on
Sunday. Being told course will be similar to SOMA 1/2 due to some
problems with Alma School road in terms of traffic diversion.
Should be flatter and faster course. Barricades in downtown Tempe
along Mill Ave (ASU bar scene) will make for good spectating. RUN
COURSE WILL NOT CHANGE.
I was also sickly hoping for some hills, as well. I have been riding that course on the CT since 12/8/04. Only dreading the possibility (probability) of a headwind.
Now we have the possibility of a canceled swim, or a swim in mud, a flat three loop bike course. Maybe they will have a gold ring we can try and grab as we go around each time. That’s OK. It is the first IMAZ, and we will always be able to say we swam in mud at the inaugural IMAZ, and got dizzy on the bike course.
I’ve heard rumors that the problem was with Fountain Hills not the Indian Res, but either way there are rumors flying all around about this race. Hopefully they will get it all straightned out soon. I plan on riding the course again in early March and I’d like to see the real course.
No rumor, it is true. Course will be more technical with a lot more turns and very little uphill. Here is course as of right now:
west out of transition to Priest
Over priest and east on frontage road, down and around Lakeview (closed right now due to lake conditions) and up into Curry
Turn around at College
back the same way and instead of turning left on Rio Salado, stay straight on Ash.
left on 3rd, left on Mill, right on Rio Salado, and then the same course out to Gilbert on the Beeline and turnaround
Sounds to be a little short to me so they will have to implement a small loop somewhere else I think. Indian Reservation was upset that the road would be closed for that long.
Definitely spectator friendly but there are going to be some crashes on the corners.
