Rudy Project WingDream Aero Test Results

I have a strange thing : the helmet take off at high speed > ~55-60km/h

It starts from the tail and then the whole helmet goes up

i have to tight it firmly in order to keep it in place

I got my money back, since there were no more white versions available. Still waiting for them to return into stock.

Did you mean lighter?

No, the S/M is heavier at 490g vs 460g for the L. Outside is the same size, so the smaller one has more foam inside to make a S/M.

Which is great for me, I’m a big guy with big shoulders and S/M head.

I had mentioned this way up in the thread, but I’ve had the same thing, especially if you have a crosswind. It was a bit interesting riding down the Keene descen at 50mph with one hadn in the bars and the other on my helmet trying to hold it straight. Tightening it and jamming it really tight into my head didn’t help either, nor did lowering my head such that my visor was practically touching my forearms.

It’s the oddest feeling, not something I’ve ever experiences, but it sounds like what people described with getting helmet lift with the Poc Tempor at times. It’s really annoying since the Wing Dream fits me very well aerodynamically, and is way better than the old aerohead in every other way. But if I had unlimited $$, I think I would only use the aerohead on flat courses (or smooth courses as it tends to move around over rough pavement too), and maybe use something like the Met Drone 2 or Kask Mistral with the aero visor on hilly courses.

yes to the lift at high speed or strong cross winds

we bought it to the big iusalnd as a option to use during the race but the lift with strong crosswinds on queen k , and also down from hawi was quite insane

one ride and it went back in the bike box

allmost ripped my head off as it also twists and at times it made it quite/very dangerous

so the rudy wing , sans visor will be hemelt used on race day in a couple of weeks

With crosswind or fast turn, it is not a lift feeling, but the tail is pushing on the side way more than the Smith and HJC i have

I am a bit dispointed with this element. Very expensive and not the quality i am waiting for.

  • the screen is really easy to loose, touching the bottle is enough
  • the tightening is loosening, i have to stitch it. more important with the lift problem
  • No box for this price !
  • Fiting is not good, I need to be able to set the occipital adjustment one notch higher. And the setup isn’t firm enough; it goes out of adjustment too easily.

Certainly uplifting for us

And it’s quite extreme at times in some of the mad winds on the queen k

Jim is posting a big shoot out helmet video on Monday.

Personally very excited for this.

Thanks @Jim_EROsports for putting it together.

I suspect the Wingdream will do pretty well given all the pros who have tested it.

Guess which helmet won….

Excuse me while I shed tears into my Mistral.

I will say he only had one person tho obviously, I’m hopeful the kask isn’t too much of a dog on me, Lucy and Ashleigh can’t be too wrong…. Right

The 10 watts here and 10 watts there gets tiresome (2 rear bottles, Rudy helmet). My training buddy, we race each other, bought both so he is/was getting a potential 20 watt savings on me. We weigh the same and both ride Trek SC so very similar, so losing 20 watts is frustrating. I feel like I can’t keep up. But that being said, I’m not sure what else they could possible change on a helmet to be more aero. The Wingdream is very light and wide to direct the wind around the closed shoulders when the head is down. So if I bought one, I think I would be good for many years to come. (Trying to justify it to myself. )

I will buy it off you

Since it’s 10 megawatts slower I expect a substantial discount

FWIW, the Mistral tests well on a lot of people.

Lucy and Ashleigh get paid to be wrong… :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: As Jim says, they are all fast and all way faster than a road helmet, even an aero one.

I only bought the Wingdream because I have the ambassador discount through my tri-club and it’s a cheaper 10w improvement than a new bike/wheels. I don’t think I’d drop $600 on any helmet right now, no matter how many watts it saved me.

Most people seem to finding zero watts (myself included) for the rear bottles, if this is the EZgains but perhaps his wallet now being a lot lighter could have a 10w impact on a hilly course.

Did someone mention already the adjustability of the strap? Coming from below it branches to the rear and the front (on both sides). If you make the rear branch shorter thereby making the front branch longer, the helmet will rotate backwards, thereby improving visibility. The strap will close closer to your throat though.

Rumor has it Jim started testing the next generation helmet in development, Rudy Project’s WingDream Extreme, and he claims it saves some riders 90 to 100 plus watts. Pricing will be around $1800 USD. Pre-order link to follow – watch this thread space for updates.

I believe I read that you can get a small AC unit installed, but it was only for Pros at the moment.

It also needs some sort of installed nutrition feeder.
