Never saw anything about his race in the text coverage but finally posted his final results
421/1340/1310 18 00:31:41 03:57:06 02:30:53 07:16:33
Not bad first half ironman double amputee above the knees and just 18
3:57 bike which is the hardest event for him I’ve read.
His run was 2:30 which was pretty damn good.
I’d read in latest triathletemag his farthest bike to date was 30 miles he has most problem on the bike because he has to use his hip muscles more can’t use his quads and hes had problems with various models of legs keeping them on and with pain.
has bit of a way to go before doing hawaii in oct but
Hes well on his way I’d say if he can work out the bike issues.
I met rudy at competitor awards banquet 5 or 6 years ago
at sea world in san diego… before the banquet we were all
hanging out in the arcade looked over and this kid with two artifical legs was playing basket ball…
They did a special on him during the banguet with a video story… He was doing relays back then with robin williams and wendy ingrahm (he did the swim)working towards doing his first triathlon which he eventually did.
Now hes 18 old enough to do hawaii and the article says he asked bob babbit what he needs to do to make it happen so they decided he needed to first do a half ironman and todays race was it.
Should be interesting to see how he progresses with the bike part. Hes ran a mile in 5:57 and a really good swimmer…
Damn, Rudy swims like a fish! He beat my swim time! I did catch him on the bike around mile 15, and he was chugging away at a decent pace looking relaxed.
I had the pleasure of meeting Rudy when he was about 12 years old and gave him some bodyboarding lessons. Great kid with a great attitude!
He’s awesome. Whenever you struggle, just remind yourself of how hard he has to work even just to do T1 and T2. He also seems unfailingly positive, which is amazing.
He seems like a great kid…I had a chance to talk to him a bit when he was at the Lifetime Fitness Triathlon this year. It’ll be awesome to see him taking on Kona next year!
I read about a guy who finished a half in South Carolina back in early October - he was also a double amputee. He finished in just over 7 hours (the article said that it was the first time in history that a double amputee on prosthetic legs) and he plans to do IMCDA next year. Very impressive.

You taught him well. At SD Tri Challenge last week he showed me a pic of him pulling into an overhead barrel near Newport on a shortboard. He rides ‘stand up’ on his stumps. Rudy’s a stud.
Short story about Scott Rigsby.
The 1st race I was ever in was a sprint in Panama City this April. At the strart time it was pouring rain, with huge gusts blowing the rain sideways. I looked out at the gulf and it was a mess, 4-6 ft chop just going everywhere. The race was delayed an hour and everyone was huddled up around the bar trying not to get struck by lightning. I was nervous as hell and see this big badass looking dude kind of moving around in the crowd. It took me a few seconds till I noticed he was walking around on 2 prosthetic legs and it hit me that that if he could do this then I better get my mind in gear and race. It was a small sprint but I think there was another double amputee in it besides rigsby.
