David - I’ve read a few race reports but seeing as you’ve been there 5 times, what are the road surfaces like on the bike?
Road surface is smooth as glass for almost the entire bike. Probably the nicest bike course I’ve ever ridden.

Is it ok to swim in the water pre race (few days before) ? What is the water temperature? My wife is racing we plan to camp in a minivan on race site. Is it a desolate area or are there restaurants/grocery stores around?
You will be in a great area with lots of choices fairly close by. The water temperature should be about 70° and it will definitely be wetsuit legal. It is a shipping canal and it is generally closed, although there may be some does need times for swimming. Rothsea, are you man-made lake is very close by.
It will be perfect for you and you will love it!

Swim training in the Main-Donau-Canal
The Main-Donau-Canal is a state-owned waterway that is mainly used for boating and ships.
Therefore, swimming in the Main-Donau-Canal is generally forbidden. The general
swimming ban will be revoked for the participants so that they can do some swim training, and
ships and boats will be stopped during the following hours:
Friday, July 12th, from 6:30 a.m. until 9:00 a.m.
Saturday, July 13th,from 6:30 a.m. until 9:00 a.m.
how about bike rentals? I dont want to bring my bike. My wife is bringing hers though, so we want to preview the course.
These are the shops in the area that were listed in the athlete guide. I only had interaction with Tobias at Werkstatt. He has a small but full service shop, but I’m not sure about rentals. His English was limited but workable. Try the email in the link at the bottom.

O yea my wife’s bib is 3481
She is going into this race with less than 8 weeks training… was last minute, never did 70.3 or greater. (but has 3:16 marathon PR on hilly course, 1:37 2.5 mile swim, bike is a wash she crashed a year ago and still lacks confidence)
