Roof Rack > Fixed mounting point vs door mount

Have been out shopping for cars the past few weekends. I intend to buy a roof rack at some point down the road.

I’m noticing that some cars come with a fixed mounting point…basically a threaded insert below the rubber gutter, over the door frames.

Are these any better than a door mount? Not going to base a car purchase off whether or not it has a factory-installed mounting point, but it’s a consideration…definitely looks cleaner.

As a side note, roof rack systems (mounts, bars, trays, 2 bike) are +/- $500 ?!

Thoughts?

Thx

well, ours clamps onto frame above the door.

on a trip out to west texas where the speed limit is 80, with 3 bikes on top of our prius.

the whole rack slid backwards about 6 inches!!!

everything was ok but that was kind of scary when we arrived at the destination and I noticed.

I think a fixed mount would be superior in every way.
