Mitt Romney was asked why, when he is asking everyone to support the surge, none of his five sons have enlisted or served.
He responded in part:
‘‘One of the ways my sons are showing support for our nation is helping me get elected because they think I’d be a great president.’’
Lame. I think it’s a lousy question, because not everyone is suited for military service, but that’s just a lousy answer. He pointed out that one of his sons is now doing an RV tour of all 99 Iowa counties. As if that is serving the nation. Sheesh.
I completely agree with you on this. A totally lame answer to a lame question, probably one that should never have been asked. Sometimes these politicians try so hard to give the answer that they think is the “right” answer when the simple truth would pretty much just shut everyone up. How perfect would it have been if he would have answered, “You know, reporter/interviewer, that is a good question. Every person on this planet has been blessed with talents for different things. Not everyone has the physical ability or the mental fortitude to be a soldier in our armed forces.”
That is a strange answer grom Governor Romney because my understanding is that he has done remarkably well answering questions on the fly that have left people with nowhere else to go. I don’t know if I want him to be our next President or not, but I think he’ll help to raise the bar in the primaries.
Probably should have said that his sons are their own men and that if they were interested in serving he would support them. While the answer is lame, these candidates get asked a million questions a day, and they’re bound to blurt out something they wish they hadn’t periodically. It doesn’t seem that bad to me.
Anyway, Romney came and spoke at my business school last fall, and I am 100% pro-Romney . . . will be very disappointed if he is not the next president. His management skills, common sense, and high moral character (at least for a politician) will make him great IMO.
If you’re going to campaign on the premise that the War on Terror is the defining struggle of this generation, then you need to anticipate this question, and have something better planned as a response. That’s just dumb politics.
I agree that his answer to the question was pretty bad. However, anyone with half a brain (which seems to eliminates about 90% of the US population) would realize that it’s a bullshit question.
Completely agree w/ you on Romney… He’s the only one who even seems like a leader and president. Reminds me kind of Ronald Reagan in demeanor and presence.
