Just was out for a nice run on the bike path in my neighborhood. I have a perfect 5 mile out and back that I really like to do once a week to get a good tempo run in. Anyway I wasn’t paying attention and I drifted off the path and rolled my ankle. I had to limp home the last 1/2 mile. I can feel the damn thing swelling as I sit here and type.
Anything I should do for this besides Advil and Ice?
Dude, ice, cold soak for the next few days. (You knew that already) Advil is your friend.
Pool running!
Biggest piece of advice. Let it heal. don’t attempt any weight bearing exercises until its good to go. 4 weeks is cutting it close, but your best chance is to wait until a week prior to the race, and then do the best you can.
no advil, keeps your blood from clotting and your injury will bleed out more. the blood will clot and cause secondary hypoxicinjury. i rolled my ankle badly 6 weekss before chesapeakeman. Took lots of advil and ewas MUCH worse off ten days after the injury than 3 days after.
The ice baths are definitely a winner though, ice water for ten minutes is what I was told. The physical therpaist also really helped. My ankle was insanely large, it would wiggle when i walked. One day of physical therpay brought it down 80%, three days of physical therapy it was almost back to normal.
ice, ice, ice. elevate it, compression, and PT. I would use some modalities on it too, like muscle stim. any good PT’s arpund you in c-bus? or else you can come here and wie will take good care of you.
hey, she’s probaby seeing patients. just call up and see if you can get in. they’ll tell you about insurance/cost, etc. nice girls at the front desk too…very helpful. i remember Matt saying he had time Friday morning. i’m going monday instead–you should call right now.
Lemme know if ya need anything further. I just started running again 2 weeks ago, and this last week I was able to bump my mileage up to 8, 10, and then 12 miles today.
The absolute, most important thing, is RICE for the first 48 hours.
If this means you hafta take a day or 2 off work (or, if you can keep your ankle elevated and iced while at work) then that is what you must do.
Go see a sports med/A.R.T. person. Sooner is better. If all goes well, you can start pool running in mebbe a week, easy biking in 2, and running sometime thereafter.
