Rock 'n Roll Man 1/2 Macon GA

Has anyone out there done this race before? I am hoping to get an idea of the course and weather. How are the aid stations?

I did it the first year it was held, in 2004. The course has changed since then and the race has grown. However, count on heat and hills. The Macon area is rolling terrain and while the hills aren’t all that big, they are relentless. It’s also very hot and humid; the day I did the race, the heat index was over 100 when we were running. It’s been a little cooler down here so far this spring (I live two hours south of Macon) but that is, of course, relative – it’s about 92 degrees this afternoon.

However, it’s a very good race – well done and well organized. The course is challenging but fair and there were plenty of aid stations when I did the race. Just be ready for an inferno.

I’ve done it 3 times now I think. If you like suffering, it’s an awesome race. I absolutely love it. Robert pretty much nailed it. Expect tons of heat and outrageous humidity and rolling terrain on the bike. The run is pretty flat, but is very exposed for most of it. Great volunteers and atmosphere. I think it’s a ton of fun and a heck of a challenge.

One warning, don’t look at previous years times and think you’re going to walk away with a win. It really is run under pretty darn tough conditions and there’s a reason the times are that slow.

raced or volunteered for the race the last 4 years. weather can be brutal. there is not a whole lot of shade on the run course so it can get tough out there if the weather gets hot. Bike course is called “rolling” but it is on the harder side of “rolling” hills. wind can be a factor on the bike as well. Three aid stations on the bike, first and last are water only, middle aid station is water and gatorade. Run aid stations every mile with assorted goodies (cookies, pretzels, fruit, sunscreen), water, HEED (this is what has been used in the past, but website has gatorade listed for this year), soda, gels, endurolytes, and iced rags. there is a long uphill run up to TI out of the water. and i would advise getting to packet pickup early as possible because the line can get long nearing 7 pm.

Ditto what everybody else said. Last year, they also had towels soaked in cold water at each of the run aid stations. It is typically wetsuit legal, albeit barely. The swim start was in waves from the shore and the swim course is a single loop.

The race is well supported and organized. It is a favorite of mine!

Great! thanks for yalls responses. I figured there would be heat, but good to know about the humidity and hills.

Awsome race. Well done with support, course, and just about everything but the hill up from the lake to t-1 but hey that is not their fault. Race hard at Rock and Roll Man it is a great one!!! PM me for more

They give out the coolest AG awards. Little guitars. I have one on my counter at work and every body remarks about it. Of course they ask if I play the guitar and seem very upset when I say it’s an award for a triathlon. :frowning:

It is a great course. The bike is very scenic if you look. It is tough. The hills in the middle of the ride will eat you up if you try and hammer. If you hit it right you can maintain some momentum climbing the next hill, but it won’t take you all the way over.

Good luck, have fun.

The year I did the race it was not wetsuit legal. If it is legal, it won’t be by much.

What everyone said and yes it is a well organized race. And I say I like it despite my worst ever Half performance at it.

I do this race pretty much every year. I do like this race, it always humbles me but one of these days I will beat this course. It is a great venue and very well run. As everyone says the heat, hills and humidity can be brutal. The little repleca guitars are one of the coolest awards I’ve ever gotten. I highly recommend this race. And yes I will be back again this year.

Ditto on the other post. Very well run and organized. Hilly than you would think and usually muggy and hot. Borderline wetsuit legal.
