Never done the race but heard the roads are full of pot holes and very rough? Anyone raced the last couple of years please comment.
Thanks

Not very rough. Not glass smooth or perfect by any means. But not bad. I’d say they are “average” California roads.
I agree with “average”. You’ll notice a nice change in quality transfering back from SLO county into Monterrey county.
Just beware of the first section out of transition to the Beach climb, this little access road is in rough shape and will be strewn with peoples water bottles and nutrition.
They’re old country roads that have been baked by searing hot weather in the summer, then rained on all winter. They aren’t full of potholes or anything, but there’s a lot of cracks and tar holding the road together.

Thanks for the comments. Good race?
I’ll be down doing the course in March and I’ll try to remember to post an update on the road conditions. A couple of spots have been problematic in the past, but two years ago the county did some patching that helped a lot. There is still a pretty uneven section at the bottom of the descent off of Nasty Grade that most likely will claim a few collarbones this year.
Awesome atmosphere. Lovely swim, fantastic, easy 40 mile bike…followed by 16 mile much tougher bike, followed by brutal, hilly, hot half marathon.
Did I hear they banned the naked aid station?..if so, don’t bother ![]()
The worst roads condition-wise are within the park itself. Once your out on the county roads they’re not bad at all.
Agreed, within the first few miles there is a stretch of very poorly maintained park property. I’d make sure to ride the first section from start to the climb out of the lake to see what you are in store for. Not really dangerous, but you may pick up debris on the wheels in these sections if not careful.
