My wife and I are planning a trip to Vegas in February. I’ve heard the mountain biking near Vegas is excellent but what about the road riding? Also is there a place to rent a good road bike for a couple of days? I’d prefer to bring just my shoes and pedals with me.
I can tell you about a course in Henderson that kicked my ass. ![]()
Take a look at the ride calendar for the Las Vegas Valley Bicycle club: http://www.vegasbikeclub.org/page_rides.html
I have done both the Wednesday morning NuVision Cycles ride through neighborhoods in West Las Vegas featuring a nice 2-mile steady climb through a retirement community halfway though the ride as well as the Thursday early morning Starbucks ride which heads West to the Scenic Loop at Red Rock Canyon (about 1,500’ climbing over 12-miles).
not sure about a bike shop but just go to charleston road near redrock casino and ride towards the redrock loop (there are no turns). great roads with good bike lane. redrock loop is nice.
You can rent a road bike at ProCyclery on West Charleston, 702.228.9460. Of course there are others, but that’s my best suggestion. A nice ride is west on Charleston toward Red Rock (Charleston turns into SR 159); at Red Rock about 11 miles out on a steady but mild incline, turn right when you get to Red Rock Visitors’ Center and go around the 13-mile one-way scenic loop road (skip this if you’re not up for climbing). There’s a restroom there for any needed stop. On the loop there’s some good climbing involved at the beginning, also some nice fast descending later. Then back out onto SR 159, at this point either turn left on SR 159 to go back the way you came (watch for traffic!), or turn right to go on to Blue Diamond (about 8 miles farther) where you can stop at a little convenience store to water up. It’s a very small town; you’ll find it. Just go down a little hill after the right turn into town and hang a left at the elementary school; the convenience store is on the right. It’s a major cyclists’ stop. The way back from Blue Diamond is a pretty fast ride, more downhill than uphill. Oh, you can stop at the Starbuck’s along Charleston, north side near Town Center, either on the way out or the way back – also a major cyclists’ meeting place. It’s abour 3½ miles out from ProCyclery.
I second the RedRock Canyon loop ride - only 12 or 15 miles (I forget), so I did it twice (lots of climbing) then a long, flat section with a bike lane back to town.
Also, I biked from Vegas, out to Henderson, past Lake Mead and then out to the Hoover Damn. AWESOME ride, scenary and destination - but, be ready for the return route up the mountain from AZ into NV - ouch. I’ll remember that for a LONG time. No cell phone coverage for a lot of it and take plenty of water/provisions as there is only help at the Damn, half way (just past Lake Mead near the hotel/intersection) and back towards Henderson.
Not to Hijack your thread, but I am going to Vegas next week for a conference. I am runnning the marathon on Sun. I figured a way to kill some time, have some fun and stay out of trouble would be to get a road bike. I called the shop in the above link and they have Jamis bikes for about $140/week. McGhies (?) has Cannondale Rseries for about the same price. LasVegascyclery.com has Cannondale six13’s and Synapse’s for about the same price.
I’d appreciate any more information on rides/routes. If anyone is local and wants to ride I’d be up for that as well. I’ll have afternoons free.
