Road Rash (2)

Got taken out today by a dog. It wasn’t trying to bite me. It seriously wanted to ram my bike and had much success. It actually knocked my bike out from under me. My hip, leg, arm, back, and head cushioned my bike’s fall. Miraculously there’s not even a scratch on my new Cervelo. I on the other hand have a nasty case of road rash on many parts of me. My shorts, jersey, and helmet are all ruined and even worse I guess I need to take some time off to heal up a little.

So my questions are:
How long should one wait with road rash to ride to avoid getting infections and such caused by sweating in this nice humid summer heat?

Secondly, Does anyone have any good home remedies to recommend?

hope you heel fast. look up the website for brave solider…good stuff to heel you up fast. website has good info also.

good luck

Clean the wound sites, then apply tegaderm. Slam a Vicodin if needed. Replace the tegaderm if it peels back, but don’t let the wound dry out. You’ll have nice new pink skin in a week; be careful of sunburn.

I went down pretty hard last Saturday, I really made a strong effort of icing constantly for the first 24 hours helped a ton. Also lots of ibuprofen. I thought I would be out for a long time but I am making alot of progress only a week later. Hopefully my MRI’s come back with no rotator cuff tear! Feel Better

Don’t let the big areas dry out, small spots are OK to let scab over. Depending on how bad it is you may need to get a prescription for Silver Sulfizadine (sp?) and keep a coating of that on it under gauze for a day or two. After that keep it covered with Tegaderm and go back to training.

Tetanus shot up to date?

yeah tetanus is up to date after I went to the ER yesterday. I thought my hand might be broken but x-ray’s didn’t show it. I’m feeling okay today I actually went for a run then showered to get any bacteria off and then put neosporene and gauze on it. I am going to go to a local health store and see if i can get a better healing agent. They don’t have brave soldier(nor does anyone else in my area) so I’m gonna go get a “similar” product I guess.

Ugh. Gauze on road rash. Muy Malo. Good for cleaning the rash, but if you cover it with gauze, the gauze will just become part of the scab, and will re-open the wound when you try to peel it off. This is experience talking.

As others have said, get Tagaderm patches. Read the directions carefully. Once the raw wounds have covered & there’s no more weeping, LOTS of Aloe Vera (NOT the lotion crap - go to your local health food store and get the real thing, or better yet, go get an Aloe Vera plant & use the leaves; split them open & lay them on top of the skin). It’s the best!

Sorry, should have clarified. Use the triple-layer non-stick pads. Cover the pad w/ SSD or equivalent and hold the whole thing in place w/ gauze and tape.

Go to the Doctor, ask him/her to give you a perscription for silverdine (in think thats the correct name, very close). It is a cream they put on serious burns. You will be amazed how fast it clears up.

Yeah, make sure you are using nod-adhering pads, rather than gauze, otherwise it’ll heal in to the wound. Road Rash sucks, but as you’ll hear from most roadies, everyone gets some at some point.
