I’ve been a mtn biker and adventure racer for a while and I’m working into some Tri’s this year. I’ve been using my mtb pedals and shoes on my road bike, but they have so many vents in them that my little toesies turn into popsicles (northeast weather). I figure if i’m gonna buy new shoes i might as well get road pedals and road shoes. Anyone have an opinion on what type of road pedals i should look into?
I’ve been riding Look pedals for five/six years. I’ve been thinking about switching to Speedplay Zeros one of these days, but I’m a little stuck on the large platform of the Looks.
As for shoes, visit www.bikesportmichigan.com and look for the article on the importance of fit. Just like my running shoes and hiking boots, fit is the one thing that matters more than brand, especially if you are training long. Outside of that, there are some very good tri-specific bike shoes out there. Sidi and Shimano have the velcro straps that open/close “the right way” for tri because you will be getting into and out of your shoes while underway.
Most any of the major pedal systems will work fine. Personally, I use Look as they function very well, replacement cleats are readily available, and pedals can be found in the $50-70 range.
I’ve tried regular Speedplays and didn’t like them (knee pain). I have briefly tried the new Speedplay Zeros. I liked them better than the regular Speedplays, but I can’t justify the cost since they essentially function as a superlight version of Looks.
If I was looking to try something different it would be Keywin. They look very good on paper and I’ve never heard of anybody who tried them and didn’t like them.
I second the Keywin vote. Look size platform with speedplay size weight. Cleat doesn’t wear as fast as the Look, adjustable float, good clearance, good price. Of course, toe covers would be the cheaper alternative
