I am currently done with my tri season and am gearing up for a fall marathon. I still want to incorporate two cycling sessions a week (along with 1-2 swims) to ease the mileage on my “running” knees. I can only run about 3-4 times a week (or about 35-40 miles).
First - should I ride my 73* road bike or my 78* tri bike? Which will help my running more or does it matter?
Second - I plan on riding one day a week at a hard effort (~90 minutes) and am still trying to decide on the “nature” of the second ride. I am leaning toward a ~1-2 hour recovery ride the day after my weekly long run. Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance.
just a thought, you may want to consider doing a ride before you run. i also have some knee issues and i run in the morning. i find a 45 min easy ride before my run really makes the run seem easier on the knees.
for this purpose i don’t think the STangle matters much. i’d go with the one that’s most comfortable and safer (if you are riding in traffic or a group then road position might be better)
i wouldn’t use up 90 minutes of hard effort on the bike. that would be better spent on the run doing fartleks or tempo or even intervals, or doing the ones you plan to do at a harder effort. ride for fun and do some pickups or sprints for a few minutes when you feel like letting loose.
good luck
Thanks for the input. I may try a quick ride before some of my runs to try it out. In reference to the 90 minute bike session - it is more like 40-50 minutes of hard effort surrounded by warmup/cooldown.
