After a recent crash where I smashed my helmet I am undicided on whether I purchase a Bell Volt (Road Helmet) or a Giro Advantage (TT Helmet). Would it be better if I purchase a TT helmet to wear in both training and racing so that I am I am used to it or is it better I purchase a Road Helmet (Training) and TT Helmet (Racing) which can be expensive.
Little bit of both. PBK.com has a bell alchera for $50. It’s a descent helmet that still looks good and won’t break the bank for a training g helmet then you can still buy the race day aero helmet.
a road helmet. i really wouldnt buy a tt helmet, at least not until they approve some of the better ones. i dont think the shape is as good as it can be due to safety regulations.
road helmets look much cooler. no matter how you put it, an aero helmet makes you look like a sperm head.

Yeah those Spuik helmets seem to be slowing a lot of the pro time trialist down…

Speaking of Spuik helmets, man! They are incredible! I rode one yesterday, and it’s comfy, cool looking, and fits me perfectly.
Also, on this note: triathlon cycling is about trying to be as fast with the limits placed upon you. UCI says 3:1, so your downtube is going to be 3:1. You need to run a fast off the bike, so your position is going to be way forward. Is this 80* more efficient than 73*? Who knows! These are the rules, and so companies will work within the confines to bring you the fastest equipment possible under these conditions. Sure, some companies (Cheetah) will work outside the box, but they have that ostricized status for being from “outside the box”.
you shouldn’t wear a TT helmet for both racing and training. You need either a road helmet or both.
x2 It’s both a comfort and looks thing. Get the Bell Alchera (a great mid-price helmet with a lot of ventilation…mine cost $40), or some other last year’s road helmet on sale; and a Advantage2 or Rocket on eBay for $100. For $150 you can easily have both.
UCI has tightened the regulations for TT helmets, so they´re not eggshells anymore. But they´re NOT very comfortable riding, so I´d use a road helmet for all training rides. Besides, you don your aero helmet and put on your race wheels when you want to feel fast and go fast
According to Mr. Cobb, but i mean what does he know… the L. Garneau(not exactly one of the top aerohelmets) is 1 minute and 11 seconds faster over a 40km race.
But if you still think that extra 150 bucks for an aerohelmet is less worth it then the 1500 dollar race wheels then please inform everyone in the 25-29 age group so i can put more time in them on the bike.
i dont have race wheels, i have stock shimano wh-500 thank you very much.
cobb says you need to put the tail up to reap the benefits of an aerohelmet, others say you can tape the vents. as much as some people claim the ventilation is fine, i really dont think so. having more vents= slower aerodynamically but means cooler. ill take my vents and be cooler (since i sweat a lot) and give you a run for your money off the bike. i think your time is better spent training than buying aero equipment. a 24min 5k off the bike… really some serious work.
alexander tested in the wind tunnel, he made the choice. im not sure about wellington going to the wind tunnel or not but their run splits were amazing.

Okay fine so you’ll lose close to 2 mins per 40km compared to the same cyclist. Just because you don’t have aero wheels doesn’t mean an aerohelmet is crap.
No he doesn’t, reading comprehension is awesome. He says because the person had a behind the seat aero bottle the higher tail forced the wind over water bottle which is why it was faster.
How can you claim the ventalation isn’t fine when you don’t use one? how would you know?
But you keep dreaming that a non-aero helmet is faster then an aerohelmet because you don’t want to spend the money. Thats your choice. Have fun in you don’t want to be faster on the bike world.
Edit: Would you get over Kona in 2008? is that all you have saying why its better heres some…

I think my TT helmet, a Giro Advantage II, is more comfy than my Giro Ionos.
I suggest picking a cheap road helmet off Ebay or bonktown. You can do the same with an aero helmet. And I suggest that you get an aero helmet with a visor or mod your helmet to take a visor. Visor >>> sunglasses.
