How many of you bought road bike and put aero bars on it. Seems to me that you can buy a better road bike for the money then a tri bike. I live in a very hilly area that is why I am thinking about a road bike over a tri bike. If you have a tri bike tell me what you like about it.
Just get some clip on’s and go ride.
IMO, if it’s your first / only bike, buy a road bike. Ride it. Then, buy some clip-on aero bars. Ride it more.
You’ll buy a tri bike eventually, so you may as well have a good road bike, too… ![]()
I had an S1 with aero bars last year and really liked it. This said, now that I’ve made the jump to a dedicated tri bike and road bike I’ll never go back. I too live in a hilly area and like climbing on either bike just as much but that’s my personal preference.
A road bike with clip-ons was a triathlon bike when I started. It can be a fast set-up. The short-comings can be that you tend to have a longer top-tube/ stem combo and may have a more closed hip angle. These may not be issues depending your flexibility. As I have gotten older the stretched out position is pretty tough on my back.
Im doing the same with my new road bike. My Tri bike was to big for me. Had a chance to get an Orbea Opal. I will be putting clip on’s and move my saddle forward for my tris. I’m only planning sprints and Oly’s this and next year, maybe a half IM. But course is flat here in FL.
That’s what I did with my felt f65. Top tube is a little long and i should really get my handlebars lower to get my back more level. Aside from those things, I love the setup. Its a perfect fix until I can afford to spend the money on a nice tri bike.
which clip on aero bars do you guys use/recommend on a road bike?
Something short that will let you preserve the hip angle of the road bike. Try profile design’s dl bar, or the vision tech mini clip ons.
When I first got started I had full bars or a road bike, but these will introduce all kinds of position problems for you (compressed hip angle, too stretched out, or if you change your seat position, bad handling). A full on tri bike will be designed to handle better in a much more aero position, and thus will be faster before you even get into the aerodynamics of the frame, but start with the road bike–you’ll keep using it.
