so im training for IMOO and had been doing all of my biking on my tri bike which fits great yada yada. i have done a 2 centuries and plenty of rides over 60 miles. then i won a carbon fiber road bike which i like to ride a lot more than my aluminium felt. i have about 4 weeks left of building before taper and was wondering if its equally sufficient to do my long rides on my road bike instead of tri bike. i realize when i need to run after a long ride i should take my tri bike instead, but this is the only time i want to ride the tri bike. so should i concentrate on riding the tri or not worry and ride my road bike?
Are you worried about how you’ll do at IMoo?
You’ve come this far on the tri bike. I say stick with it. You’ll be happy on race day knowing that you didn’t change anything so there shouldn’t be any surprises. Also, going out for a 100 miler on a new bike could lead to injury.
I’m an oly racer, but I’ve got my own opinion nonetheless.
I’d say, since you’re training for such a long race, stick with the tri bike. For Olys, I have no problem using the road bike for 3 hour winter rides (or longer) since my race isn’t 3 hours. I don’t need to get my back used to the 3 hour aerobar position. But, you have to race in the aeros for such a long time that you should get used to it and stay used to it. If you were going to go for a VERY long ride, longer than the IM, then I’d say jump on the road bike for the comfort.
If you really like riding the road bike, still, then I’d say you can mix it up, just dont neglect the tri.
when you are not training with your tri bike, someone out there is. when you race him, he will beat you
Ugh. I’ve been getting ready for IMooo on a road bike. It sucks. My new P3C is being built tomorrow and then fitted and tweaked after. Every long ride I do I promise myself I won’t do another on a road bike. I just want something to *lean on *when I’m riding and I don’t want to feel like my chest is a mattress catching the wind anymore.
If I was on a tri bike I could do a 5 hour ride in 4:45.
What age group are you in? That makes a big difference. 35-39M train only on the Road bike and you have put in enough long rides you may want to start your taper now. ![]()
Any other age group stick with the tri bike, you are almost there and there will be plenty of time to ride the road bike after Sept. 9. Otherwise your neck and back will probably get you on race day.
Stay on your tri bike
.
not at all. my training has been going great, especially the bike training. almost everyone has suggested using the tri bike so basically im gonna ride the road during the week and the tri bike for long rides on the weekend.

Too funny, as I have only ridden my road bike 2-3 times this whole summer and I too felt like I was a giant mattress catching the wind! My plan had me do a 2 hour easy zone1/2 ride last week, nothing hard, light on the pedals. For a change of pace I took out my road bike for the first time since about April and it felt sooo strange and soooo slow.
Last weekend was 103miles on the tri bike, 2 weeks ago it was 112, this coming weekend it’s 130. All done on the tri bike or going to be the tri bike!
