Road bike seats vs triathlon bike seats?

ok i really love my fizik arione tri seat. very comfortable. the road bike i just bought came with a very hard, uncomfortable seat.

can i use my fizik tri seat on the road bike? or is the geometry different? plz recommend a good road bike seat.

You can ride any seat you want if it’s comfy to you. Lots of folks use road specific seats on tri bikes and vice versa. However, the Airione tri is designed with the aero position in mind, meaning more padding in the nose. No harm in trying it but you may find that it’s not as comfortable to you when riding in a more upright road position as it is on your tri bike.

other than that, it’s impossible to recommend a good road bike seat for you. Seats are so personal that I could recommend 10 great saddles that you would hate and you’ll probably like one I hate. Unfortunately, it’s sometimes just a matter of trying a few until you find one you like. Lots of shops now have demo programs that allow you to try sample seats before buying; my shop does this for Fizik road seats and has three models you can demo.

Good luck

I have to agree with BK that bike seats are very personal. I had a cardboard box in my basement full of failed experiments before ebaying them. The only saddle that ever worked really good for me is my Fizik Arion but my wife tried one and hated it. Even the Arion is more comfy on a road bike than my tri bike.

slightly off-topic, but I am beginning to tire of my current saddle (stock that came with the bike) after a couple of years on my Cervelo.

At $100+ a pop, I’m not thrilled at the idea of “experimenting” to find something more comfy. Does anyone have any solutions to this conundrum? How do you try out a few saddles in a practical way? Or does everyone just go by word of mouth and hope?

Shameless self promotion for my demo program if you are in the San Jose area:

Great program. Too bad I’m in the midwest.

“At $100+ a pop”

I hear you. I tried some expensive saddles that were soon flogged on ebay. One time i walked into a LBS and they had a “bargain bin” with a bunch of no name saddles at under $10. each. I walked out with a half dozen and tried them. One was some no brand that was the second best saddle i ever owned next to my Fizik Arion.

Yeah, I’m a big LBS guy, too, but while they have a reasonable amount of tri stuff (and a saddle pile…), not the kind of saddle selection actually in house that would lend itself to sitting on them even on a trainer for a while. Maybe they would order some and let me do that.

I use an Arione Tri2 on my Litespeed Ultimate. I’ve only gotten grief from folks that are slower!

it is up to your butt. if the saddle fits- ride it!
