Road bike search under $700

I’m looking for a new road bike for a friend for under $700. He’s not interested in a used bike, wants new. What’s out there under this price range?

Thanks,

Trek 1000 it used to retail for about $650 it should still be in that price range.

Yep… it’s $709 on the website

My son has one. Not a bad bike at all. I’m very impressed with the bike’s quality. And it doesn’t look like a $650 bike either.

I used to work in a bike shop and we would sell out of the 1000’s like crazy because of the price point. They’re great bikes and we never had any serious problems with them. The frame is good quality and relatively light so it’s easy to upgrade down the line.

I would examine an entry level Fuji, Felt or Trek.

You can probably get in on a Fuji Roubiax or Trek 1200/1500 for around that price this time of year on closeout/clearance.

I would go for the best component spec you can buy and not worry about upgrading a bike in this price point (per comments above). Truth be told, I’m not sure many frames in this price point are worth the expense you would incur to upgrade by buying parts after market unless you are very selective. A full ultegra upgrad will run you $800-$1,000. Often you’re better off selling the old and buying a full new ride than trying to upgrade components in this price range…but that’s just my opinion.

Thanks,
Does this happen to be your same “friend” who suffered from the “condition” you asked about on WebMD last week?

That doesn’t make much sense. It will feel “used” in two weeks anyways. I’d try to convince him to buy a used $1500 bike for $700 after Christmas.

Giant OCR-3.

Or really expand your buying power and get a used bike.

Oh I have also heard that if you contact them, they sometimes have older models at even a bigger discount.
