Road bike question (1)

So i am picking out a new road bike and have a few decent options. My road bike is my only bike and money is tight. I will do a few tris up to oly distance a year, no serious racing, just like to go out and have fun. I am also 45 and might be interested in something more comfortable but here is what i am thinking. Comfort and fit are factors that i will personally consider, but i am interested in opinions on the relative merits of these bikes in comparison to each other

Cervelo Soloist $2000
CAAD 9 1300
Orbea Gavia - all aluminum, kind of heavy, mix of 105 ultegra $1450
Pinarello Fp2 - carbon fork and rear triangle, 105 components, about $1850

Anybody have opinions on the differences between the bikes. The CAAD 9 and Orbea are both appealing because of the cost. I would also like something a little fun and different and the Pinarello and Orbea kind of get points there. The soloist gets points for the dual uses, but loses a lot of points on the cost.

Thoughts?

  1. What is your current ride, and why do you need a new one as opposed to upgrading parts on the old frame?
  2. http://forum.slowtwitch.com/gforum.cgi?post=2239037;search_string=soloist;#2239037 - If you look around, you can find a soloist for less than 2k.

John

I am replacing a 7 year old trek 1200. It has had it. I would love to upgrade to a fancy a$$ 3 or 4,000 machine, but i dont have the money. $2000 is in the budget, but i would love to get a good bike under $1500 and the CAAD 9 and Orbea fit.

Does anybody have an opinion on the orbea gavia?

I’ll give what IMHO could be better bang for the buck options. First check out Kestrel Talons on ebay. There is a guy there discounting last years models for under $2000. Dual purpose like Soloist but with carbon aero frame.

The check out the Neuvation site. They have some of the best deals in wheels and are now doing full road bikes. You can get a carbon bike with full Ultegra for under $2000. http://www.neuvationcycling.com/bicycles.html

Yes, fit #1 by a mile.

As for “merits”. Only 1 of your listed bikes has won an IM and was used by a pro cycling steam in stage races. Not sure what else you are looking for, but I’d get the Soloist for sure.

I owned a soloist, rode it hard for two years and have these thoughts. (this was a wish list bike)

  1. it is a stiff hard ride, but probably one of the fastest bikes I have owned.
  2. the finish on the bike was subpar for a bike at that price point.
  3. it is longish in the top tube
  4. before the Soloist I had a 5500 trek and now have a 585 Look. I like these bikes more.
  5. there is a reason pro riders ride the soloist, see number 1.
