I have a question for those of you that have Tri bikes and Road bikes. Which one do you ride the most? If it is the Tri bike, how often do you ride your road bike? I get it that you probably ride the road bike on group rides since the roadies seem to frown on tri bikes in group rides. . . but just want to get an idea of how to approach having both bikes. Is it ok to train the most on the road bike and then a couple of weeks before the Triathlon Race get on the tri bike and train on that?
Am I making any sense???
FYI: I only have a Tri bike now and am thinking of getting a road bike too for a change of pace and for group rides.
In my case I spend 85% of my time on the road bike, either group riding or riding just with my wife. Other than tris or TT’s I ride the tri bike for one ride per week, a bit more just before a race.
Two schools of thought on training. Some like Steve Larson and other top cyclist/triathletes are often a strong believer in doing most of your training on the road bike. Others say train on the bike your plan to race.
It depends on what you want to do. I find group riding much more interesting/challenging than riding solo. If you’re a 100% anti-social trigeek with triathlon as your only focus then it’s probably best to just ride the tri bike.
During the race season, and especially building up to a major race, I spend most of my time on my tri bike. I ride the roadie during the off season, for recovery rides, and on the occasional “fun” ride with roadies.
