Road Bike $2000-$3000

Currently ride a 2002 P2K which I absolutely love but am looking at buying a traditional road frame as a second bike. Last road frame was a 1996 Novara Trionfo that I bought used for my first triathlon season. I sold it a year ago to a guy who it fit better and the Tour has given me the bug again to get a new bike. Any ideas in the $2000 to $3000 price range?

To many to list.

Talk about a wide open question. So, I’ll answer it this way: what would I get, if I were buying right now, and spending $2-3K:

The lover of all things fast and Euro would get an Eddy Merckx MXLeader. Belgian steel at it’s best. Molteni Orange, or Motorola red-white-blue. Or Telekom pink, if you can find it.

The pragmatist would get a Cervelo Soloist. This bike is hard to beat, at any price. And it happens to be pretty inexpensive.

Or, I’d go to the best shop in town, and buy something on sale. Now’s a good time to save a bundle on an 05. Shop around, there are a shite load of great road bikes out there right now. Too many to list, really.

Serotta Colorado III frame (or maybe a Carl Strong in steel) = 1500

Ouzo Pro or Sub3 fork = 300

Ultegra build kit about 1200.

There. That’s what I’d do if I really wanted to spend all that instead of trying to find a deal.

For $2000 I would do what I just did which is to buy a frame on ebay for about 250 dollars (I got a specialized Allez) then build it up with DA and Ultegra which I will eventually move to my dream frame. There are always great frame deals on ebay. You could have gotten a 2000 Serotta CSi last week for 600 bucks.

There is a lot of good choices in that price range. Way too many to list.

You might read the reviews over at roadbikereview.com . This is a good source to read what owners think about different models.

Calfee Luna Pro. Spend $1500 on the frame and fix it up nice.

I second the steel Serotta. The custom sizing puts it way ahead of the other bikes at that price point.
