Last weekend, another triathlete and I jumped into the ocean for a 30-60 minute swim. Water was about 75, so of course we needed wetsuits. Anyway, after about 40 minutes of swimming back and forth we got out. It took me about 2-3 minutes of hard swimming to make it out of the water the last 10 yards.
Once out, I saw that there was a 6-8 year old girl playing near the water with her parents about 25 yards away, not paying 100% attention. Now, I usually keep to my own business, but I interrupted the parents to inform them how tough it was out there, and if their daughter got caught in the water, she would be gone. They were actually courteous and thanked me for the warning.
Last weekend, rip currents killed a 48-year-old lawyer trying to rescue his nieces off Palm Beach. The girls survived.
