Rinny-Stand Alone Marathon--I gotta ask

So she throws down a 2:50 marathon after biking 112 miles…It’s incredible.

Her running is a thing of beauty.

I realize that she probably never will run one, and I am sure this is has been discussed before, but if she runs just a marathon, how fast is it?

2:30?

My guess is 2:32-2:34
.

I don’t know if she has run a stand alone marathon, but I think 2:30 is a definite YES. Could even go 2:25. I would even go as far as 2:20.

On a good course sub 2:50 is pretty certain.

sub 2:20 has only been run 26 times EVER…shit ain’t happening w/ Rinny

Does she still have to swim 2.4 before the marathon?

I would say sub 2:30, if she were to just train for the marathon then likely she would get smaller. She’s not big for sure but she is not crazy skinny like a kenyan or Radcliffe etc.

It’s actually a very tough question to answer. Sure, theoretically, she could. The issue is whether she can absorb a year of running 120mi a week
to be competitive, without getting injured. Allen tried to switch one year and it didn’t quite work out. No doubt she’s a phenomenal runner, but let’s
not underestimate the difficulty of running 120mi a week, week in, week out.

… And the 2:50 is in the mid afternoon heat of Hawaii, no less, so who knows? Her best half IMs are also not far of 75 minutes (plenty of 77s anyway), so yeah, 2:30 no problem, I bet … How many Aussie women can run 2:30-35 marathons right now?

What would be her stand alone marathon without a swim and bike preceding it and what it would be taking a year to train are both interesting questions.

Saw Rinny speak and someone asked her that question; she’s very modest and just replied she specializes in running off the bike.

But my guess high 2:30- low 2:40’s course depended

Did a quick google search on the Commonwealth Games- “In the women’s marathon, Jess Trengove (2:30:12) secured bronze in an amazing day for Australian long-distance running, finishing behind dominant Kenyan pair Flomena Daniel (2:26:45) and Caroline Kilel(2:27:10).”
.

She might not be all that much faster, relatively. She is the best runner of the bike of all time, but that does not = a whole lot faster, necessarily. Not only a thing of beauty, but moreover a super nice person. In Roth she spoke to my wife for so long that we missed talking with other pros. Wonderful person!

2:20?! No. Shalane Flanagan, America’s best marathoner and a legit world class stud just went to the fastest course in the world with two superb male pacemakers, ran a huge PB and got 2:21:14. Her (admittedly lofty) goal was Kastor’s American record of 2:19:4X. Less than 20 women in history have cracked 2:20.

if you are looking for answers from triathletes then most of your answers are going to be low 2:20’s.

+1, the reality is much closer to 2:32-2:35

or even 2:40

23 seconds per mile faster

On a cool, ideal course like London, I’d like to think she could go under 2:40 which ~34:30 10k time.

I agree.

I think she has said herself that she might not even get into the 2.30s.
This seems insane as she runs a 2.50 after swim and bike, BUT, I think Rinny would be far closer to her standalone times than most of the men (at Kona).
Simply as a function of energy expenditure and he advantage in the heat and humidity because of her size.

Many of the men have ‘predicted’ their standalone marathon the mid 2.20s. This is probably wrong on a couple of counts, 1) They are men and like to exaggerate (especially when they know it will never be tested
2) the ‘predicted’ time is often based on 6-12 months of training for the marathon, with weight loss etc. etc.

Get them on a marathon course now and I think we would see a handful drop into 2.20s, van lierde, frodeno, rana, Bart.

But they are ~ 15-20behind in an ironman, maybe 30 minutes behind in kona, this is accounted for by the closed loop energy system, the central govenor is forcing them to slow down, the heat is impacting their ability to take in energy etc.

But, this effect is much less when you carry less weight and muscle mass, i.e. Rinny.
