Riding with dbl vision

Question for the group.
Has anyone experienced double vision during a long training ride? Last nights after work ride was 30 miles. After a particular long hill about 20 miles into the ride I developed temporary double vision that continued past a 5 minute water break, and a 5 minute break to watch the open water swim drills at seward park by the RTB tri team. I tried to rehydrate with water+electrolights and recharge will Gu and Chumps but the vision problem lasted until about 1 hour after cool-down. I still had energy to surge up-tempo at the end of the workout. I’ve been deeper in glucose debt before but never had this vision thing.

I suspect it may have been caused by:

  1. I’m tapering for a marathon in 2 weeks and have cut back on daily calories.
  2. Tried a new electrolite powder last night and may have mixed the concentration with too much powder and not enough water. Its the drink that will be available in the 26.2 and I wanted to try it in training before racing with it. Cytomax
  3. I was really pushing myself to not get dropped while riding with a faster more experieinced group of roadies. Ya see, when I’m cranking I sometimes forget to drink. I felt strong all the way through the workout. That is to say I have bonked far far worse than how I felt last night.
  4. Some combination of all of the above.

Has anyone have a similar experience during training or perhaps racing in warmer weather?
Has anyone had vision issues using Cytomax?
Cheers

Double vision is not normal under any circumstance, see a doctor.

Don’t waste time with an internist–go see an ophthalmologist (rather than optometrist). It may have a simple cause and a specialist will help you avoid unnecessary tests. Internists/primary care doctors sometimes immediately get an MRI when they hear double vision.

If it happens again see if it goes away when you close either eye. Some double vision is optical and occurs because of focusing problems. Double vision with both eyes is more likely to be neurological and more likely to be serious.

Riding in an aggressive tri position would seem to put a certain amount of strain on your eyes (head down, eyes straining up). Could that be it?
