Riding the Rail, Winnipeg to Hudson Bay (BBC Photo Gallery)

A BBC photo gallery trek on a 1,700 kilometer rail line in Manitoba. Here’s the click bait: the First Nations local folks want to buy the tracks, which the rail company, America-based OmniTRAX, owns (they’re losing money on the deal right now, and want to unload the line). Parts of the rail line are deteriorating, too, and OmniTRAX doesn’t want to sink any more money into upkeep, either.

For many people along the line, the train is how they get their groceries and medical supplies. But that’s not the only complication in this tale. Muskeg. Muskeg (a type of swamp) is a complication. No way to build roads through it, for one.
