Riding on Flats

I see people talk about riding on flats. Doesn’t this damage the rim? I bought some good wheels and would not want to ruin them by riding on a flat. Your help is appreciated.

Edit: (referring to clinchers here, if it matters)

I think they mean something else. I think they’re talking about wearing their racing flats and platform pedals. Slow T1, but wicked fast T2.

I know guys who have ridden 2-3 miles on flats, to me wheels cost too much to risk it. At a bare minimum it will knock them out of true.

I think if you have tubulars you can ride on a flat for a short while.

Were I live there is a business park and it has some long flat roads. So I guess when I tear around there on the weekends I ride in the flats.

Riding flat on the flats is ok, but never fart in the hills!
