Anyone ride highway 89 between truckee and tahoe city. I know it is pretty heavily travelled, but wondering if there is a good shoulder to ride on? I have driven the road a million times, but not recently and don’t remember what it is like.
thanks
Yeah, I’ve ridden it, and it’s pretty sketchy going towards Tahoe, not so much going towards Truckee. To clarify, no worries whatsoever from Truckee to Alpine Meadows; sketchy from Alpine to Tahoe. There is a bike path next to the river but as always, the bike path has its own set of problems.
The towards-Tahoe drivers are pretty mindless. I actually had some contact there last summer. Not cool.
I just spent a week there after my HIM in Napa. We rode the bike path several times with no problems. Very pretty portion of the ride but you do have to be extra alert for unexpected actions by other users of the bike path.
And bears too. I came across a huge one while running between Alpine and Squaw. Scared the crap out of me when I came around a corner and he was right in the middle of the path. I said “hey bear” not knowing what else to say and not wanting to surprise him. When he turned to face me instead of running away I charged up the hillside faster than I thought possible.
FWIW, a great ride is to do Truckee to Tahoe City, over to Kings Beach, up and over 267 and back to Truckee. It’s about 40 miles with one good climb and a few rolling hills.
Just drive over to Incline and ride up and down Rose Mountain a few times…
.
I’m jealous. I love Tahoe.
