Riding in Lower Westchester (Mamaroneck)

Hi everyone,

Just moved to Mamaroneck from Minnesota and looking for some great rides around the area. I have already ridden from Mamaroneck towards Scarsdale on Old White Plains rd… Could anyone tell me of other good ride routes and sites to find them? Also, would anyone in the area but up for a ride during the week or on the weekend?

Thanks in advance!
Doug

When I lived in Scarsdale, High Caliper Bike Shop in White Plains had fast group rides on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. There was also a ride from Greenwich HS on Wednesdays. I think all started at 6 PM. Also, every Saturday, Sunday and holiday, the infamous Gimbels Ride thunders through. All these rides take in great roads. Also, check out the North County rail trail, but not on a weekend. It’ll take you up into Putnam County where there are awesome roads and climbs. Talk to the guys at High Caliper.

Don’t know much about Mamaroneck, but up the road a bit in Greenwich there is a solid group that rides and swims regularly. Standing Friday morning swims at Tod’s Point at 6:00. There is a group of us that typically ride on Saturday and Sunday mornings (early) for 3-5 hours. Usual speed is about 17 mph which is deceptive given the hills in the area.

PM me with your email and I’ll get you on the list. Welcome to the area.

Hey Doug. We are neighbors as I am a couple towns over in New Rochelle. My schedule is pretty tight with work/family so alot of my riding is done on a computrainer or I squeeze short rides in during my lunch break, but check out http://www.altheus.net/

They’re close to you & have some group rides going. I did one a couple years ago before the Westchester Tri & it was pretty well organized. Not sure what the regular/weekly group rides are like.

You could also try to ride down Boston Post Rd towards CT, but I’d be careful what time of day you do that. Traffic can get a bit hairy on that stretch.
