Riding in LA area Fri/Sat: What Rides?

We will be around LAX. Looking for rides on these days. Simi Valley might be on the menu Saturday, but all suggestions are welcomed, thanks! Keau

For Saturday rides, the Montrose is the best. Starts at the Rose Bowl. Two groups going on right now. One that leaves about 7:30 and another at 8:00AM. The 7:30 rules are it more of spinning and you stay in the smaller gear up front. The larger and fast group is anything goes. About 100 riders in the 7:30 and 200 in the 8AM. These are roadies. http://www.socalcycling.com/.../weekly/montrose.htm

Then there are the triathlon groups, LA Tri and Pasadena Tri. The Pasadena Tri Club has not stated where there ride will be this weekend yet, but always starts in Sierra Madre at 7:30AM.

From LAX you have a couple of good options that don’t require driving. Lax - Southbay, Flat and easy until you hit Palos Verde and you can decide how much climbing you want to do with multiple routes up and over the mountain, then flat ride back to LAX. Saturday, you can hook up with “The donut ride” which is a fast ride (lots of pro’s) leaving from Redondo Beach Village (Catalina Coffee shop) at 8:00am with up to 50+ guys or a mellow “doctor’s ride” that departs the same spot at 7:00am.

Or Lax- North into Santa Monica/Malibu. Just head into the mountains and bring a map. Tons of routes, great views and climbs.

Check here for routes, plug in Palos Verde, I have a couple on there.

Thanks!

Yeah looking for a group roadie ride, something similar to rides down here (Swamis-ish). Montrose sounds great, Ill use the routes posted for our friday morning stuff.

I keep hearing about the Simi Valley ride, anyone been on it lately?

Keau

front group goes hard, the rest accordingly, ill be there
.

Great ride at Westlake Starbucks at 8am. Starts at the Starbucks on Agoura Rd, just east of Westlake Blvd. Heads up to Rock Store and all over the Santa Monica Mountains. Sometimes hits Fernwood, Piuma, Encinal or Latigo. Bring your climbing legs.

X2 on the Simi Ride for Saturday. Go to Triathlon Lab for a shorter ride on Fri. Tell them you want to ride the PV ride. Very pretty

The best ride on Saturday is the Simi Ride. Several Pro’s do it on a fairly regular basis. The Montrose ride is fast and flat. If you do it you have to be on the front or on the back. The pack is very squirrely and traffic laws are rarely observed.

The Simi ride starts at Topanga and Lassen goes over Santa Suzanna Pass and meets with the main group at Khuener and Los Angeles at 0840, but make sure you get there a little early. It goes thru Simi then splits into 3-groups for a short time. All 3 are fast and go to Portrero then Hidden Valley/Lake Sherwood. The groups come back together at Triunfo Park(bathrooms and water). It then heads to Kanan, Cornell, and Mulholland. Re-group at the top of Mulholland and a steady ride back to Simi.

If you decide to do the Simi Ride PM me and I’ll give you beter directions

Maybe I’ll see you there

I used to do this route when I lived in SFV. Rock Store climb was a challenge for me. Painted on the road near the top was “Go Lance” and “USA”, but I suppose that’s gone by now.
Then head to Malibu for some scenic but dicey PCH riding back to Santa Monica. If you have legs try Latigo or Topanga (the climbs on Topanga have no shoulder and heavy traffic certain times of the day, so be careful).

Or continue to Santa Monica and ride through Venice Beach if you haven’t been there before.
Take Sepulveda back to the SFV and head back to Simi.

Wonderful ride, lots of rural canyons, switchbacks, and scenery. Enjoy!

The weather this weekend should be in the 80s. If you want to climb mountains, the Pasadena Tri Club will be riding up Hwy 39 to the West Fork and Cogswell Dam. It will be 56 miles from the start at the Starbucks in Sierra Madre at 7:30AM sharp on Saturday.

The maps shows the route from the second start at Encanto Park at 8:00 AM.

Man, Nick, you’re really getting into this! Ditching the incoming epic swell for a group ride!

FRI AM: SUGGESTIONS?

SAT AM: Simi Ride

I called tri lab they had no clue of friday AM rides. Let me know and thanks!

Keau

B5,

I figured Id head for the Starbucks on Lassen and topanga Cyn from LAX marriot. Let me know if you have a shortcut, thanks! Keau

hahaha if my legs arent dead you can count on me being out at south jetty that afternoon. swell shouldnt be full force til the afternoon(or atleast thats what ive convinced myself of at this point)

but hell jay im having to much fun out there on the road!

sunday is 100% committed to the swell though.

Hey, that’s good! I’ll be putting in 40 miles on the bike and a 4-mile run first, then hopefully squeeze in a surf if the wife lets me on Saturday.
Have a good one! Hey, check this link. Could be something for you to check out Nick:

It still says “Go Lance” towards the top, at the last left hand turn, with a yellow jersey painted on the road.

Take the 405 North to the 118 West or the 101 North(I think it’s called North but it actually goes West). I like the 118 better because of less traffic and street driving with stop lights. Exit Topanga. From the 118 go South and from the 101 go North to Lassen. The Starbucks is on the North/West corner.

On the bike go North on Topanga to “Old Santa Susanna” (A small street just past Chatsworth) go left. It comes out on Santa Susanna go left. It’s about a 12min climb. Continue over and down the other side. At the bottom it turns into Khuener. Stay on Khuener to LA ave and go left. You will see the group. This ride takes about 30min.

The ride will go up LA thru Simi. At Madera the ride will split into 3-groups. They are all fast. The long group goes right to Easy St(not easy) and then Norwegian. The medium group goes straight to Norwegian. The short group goes left over Olsen. All three groups go across Lynn to Portrero(hard 8min climb), thru Hidden Valley and over Lake Sherwood to Westlake. Re-group at Triunfo Park(Triunfo West of Westlake). The group then goes Agoura Rd. to Kanan go right to Cornell go left to Mulholland go left. The next 30min can be pretty hard. Stay on Mulholland to the first street past Stunt(I can’t remeber the name but we call it 7min) go left to the top. Re-group. Down Mul to Topanga go left to Valley Circle go left back to Chatsworth.

Maybe I’ll see you out there. I will be wearing a White/Yellow BGM Sports Australian team kit.

…From the 118 go South and from the 101 go North. The Starbucks is on the North/West corner. …
There are probably several Starbucks all up and down Topanga. He might need a cross street since that is a large distance between the two freeways.

Don’t know what your schedule is Saturday after the ride but getting back to the LAX area in the afternoon can take a while from Simi. I’d say 1.5 hours.
