Riding in Central NJ

Relocating to central NJ (Hightstown) later this summer. Anyone got info on what the riding is like in this area? Closer to the beach, it appears the triathlon club scene is pretty active. I have taken a few visits, but not enough to get a feel for the place.

Thanks,

Chris

There’s some cycling clubs in that area that do the usual club ride stuff.

Check out the Princeton Freewheelers and the CJBC, they should be in your area.

There are a number of routes that ‘start’ in eastern Monmouth county and run west towards PA and loop back. I did a number of these routes when training for IMMoo last year.

There is an active tri scene at the shore. There are sprint races pretty regularly and a favorite is the Sandy Hookers races in Sea Bright. Good race for beginners or a 57-61 minute hammer-fest for some good speed work

Also check out www.personalbestnutrition.com. There is a forum on there and the owner Brian Shea is from that area and organizes rides & does some coaching. And if you buy something from his website he usually throws in a free water bottle. Also check out the Freehold Area Runners Club (www.farcnj.com) for running resources.

Somerset and Hunterdon counties is pretty country. Lots of rollers and short steeps. Lots of bike shops to choose from, some running stores and several bike/run stores carry tri gear. Course, the heat index is 105 today. Cheers.

Sounds good, and many thanks for the tips. Yeah, saw the Sandy Hooker site and planned on doing their club race. First race since an IM 2001. Figured it would be a nice way to get back into things.

Cheers,

Chris

Chris, I live in Princeton, and having relocated from Denver, I have spent the last nine months figuring out the tri scene. I can certainly be of help as you make the transition, in terms of finding a place to swim, bike maps, and trail runs. A great resource is www.emc2multisport.com This is the local tri-club, which boasts some of the top amateurs (Chris Martin) around. The club offers some outstanding sponsorship deals, and is a wealth of information. Feel free to drop me an email at nittiaj@hotmail.com with any questions.

Tony

Too far north for me, sorry.
