Riding in Big Bear...some help please

I am driving up to Big Bear this friday (from Huntington Beach) to do a brick workout. I am training for CDA. I am looking to do about 30-40 miles with some good climbs. Anyone out there in the ST community know some good routes? And FYI I will be taking up my rode bike.

Also some help with good run routes (about 4 miles) would be nice.

Thanks guys/gals.

Big Bear is an excellent training location. I was there last September for arguably the best week of riding I’ve ever had.
Depending on where exactly you’re staying, there are a couple of possibilities. I think it’s about 20 miles around the lake, but that’s pretty flat. You’ll find the hilly rides on any of the 4 roads heading out of town (18N, 18S, 330, and 38). I think 330 would be a little tough to negotiate with the heavy amounts of traffic. The best climb there (IMO) is heading out on 18N toward Lucerne Valley. When I was there, I went all the way to the valley. You might need to turn around early to keep it under 40 miles, depending on where you’re staying. Another good option (not quite as tough) is to take 38S out of town, which goes up toward ~8500ft as I recall. Either of those roads on the east side of town are excellent.

As for running, you can’t go wrong. There are countless trails on both the north and south sides of the lake. I’m not sure if you could find a flat trail there. My favorite was a trail on the north side of the lake that lead up to Bertha Peak.

Have fun and bring your camera…

Thank you so much for the advice. A big help!!! thanks again

Start in town, head east out the back way towards lake williams/redlands. Ride up to Onyx Summit, 8200 feet. Dont remember the distance from town and back. and back…Lake loop is 15 miles.
Where will you be staying?

I grew up in Big Bear!
