I’ll be staying near the airport for a week-long training class. The Hotel and Training location are near Augusta National Drive and Hazeltine national Drive. Looking at Google Maps, it would appear that I could leave the hotel and head east into relatively unpopulated areas. Anybody know that area? I probably won’t ride longer than 20 miles while I’m there, I just want to do something to burn some calories. I’m taking my Bianchi Volpe, which is currently set up with wider, tougher tires and a headlight and tail light for my pre-dawn rides. I can ride it on less than perfect roads, but it is definitely not a mountain bike.
My preference would be to ride from the hotel without having to drive somewhere, but if you think that’s not a safe area, please tell me!
I recently moved to the area so I’m not super familiar with rides near the airport. That being said, I know some people do loops on one of the airport access roads, I think it is Hentzlemann Blvd.
There is a triathlon on Oct. 2 literally across the highway from the airport, but unfortunately they haven’t printed a map of the bike course, or I’d say maybe you could ride that route. See http://belle-events.com/10-02-05-eventpage.htm
OH! Well if you go west, there is a good group that rides in Windermere. I’ve gone on the “fruit loop” ride a few times with the Windermere Roadies. See http://www.windermereroadies.com/html/rides.html and they’ve also got maps. I’m not sure what the “fruit loop” roads are like in the mornings though.
If you are here on the weekend, try heading to the Lakemont ride(s). See http://www.luvbobbies.com/rides/index.html#sat. The bobbies are an all-women’s club, but the weekend rides kinda merged with another group that isn’t.
There are a ton of rides in the Orlando area, these are just a few with a website and/or route map.
