9 person pace line. Speed 20 mph+. Oncoming black Pontiac tosses two large McDonald cups full of ice and liquid. I duck the first cup and then here the yells behind me - last girl in our line got the 2nd cup right in the face and went down hard. Road rash everywhere, helmet splits down the middle and up the sides. Chain rings bent, front and rear derailleurs are toast. Needless to say the car did not stop. Called someone at home to come pick her and the bike up; she got checked out by the docs and aside from bad scrapes is ok.
What are you gonna do? Unfortunately, nothing. Think I may have found the car later that afternoon as the only reason a car should have been going in that direction on that piece of road was if it “lived” within a mile or so. But, no proof.
The moral(s): Helmet saved someone again. And, no matter how careful you are, you are still at the mercy of idiots.
Have you contacted the police at all? A description of the car and a report at least.
I would think that there may well be fingerprints or something on the cups as well.
Incidents like this happen because they don’t get reported and the perps “get away with it”. Don’t let them. Don’t do “nothing”. Contact the police and file a report.

Were you guys riding against traffic? If you riding with the traffic then the car has to be in the opposite lane to be oncoming and the cup will fly off in a different direction.
something similar happened to one of the guys i ride with and he is a very intimidating LARGE man and a member of the local SWAT unit. he went home, put on his full riot gear, and went to the home where he thought the car went. turns out the teenage son of the owner of the car had done it. my friend the officer politely told the father that while he “knew” that the son did it, he couldn’t “prove” it but that moving forward he was going to give the plate number of the vehicle in the driveway to his friends in the traffic department and will be keeping a close eye out for any incidents involving that vehicle. don’t know if it worked or not but i know the parent and hopefully the kid, were scared straight.
I dont know what state you’re in but I seem to recall an incident with a person throwing a cup from a car and then being jailed for it. If you report the incident, maybe do some leg work to determine what McDonalds are in the area see how long they keep their video’s for and you might be able to link the two together.
very simple actually. Go to the nearest mcdonalds and ask for their drive through video…or ask to see the surv. video. I am sure you will find the car there sometime!
That sucks. A few years ago I was riding in a nice area in the burbs and some kids in a SUV threw a glass bottle at my head. Missed my inches and shattered next to me. It took me a second to figure out what happened. I knew there was a light about 1 mile up the road so I hammered to get the license plate but no SUV. I only had a very vague description and no plate so I did not call the cops.
I should have called the cops because these kids were most likely doing it to other cyclists. I hope you called the cops.
That sucks bad. Hope you go after him though. My roommate and I actually found a guy who almost killed both of us riding. Nothing was done, but it is public record now if a pattern develops so I would do what I could to find them.
Why do obese people hate active people so much! Whenever I run on the shoulder of a street I get people yelling at me all the time. Not to sound prejudice, but it usually is the larger ones.

But damn man, if you’re really writing a “commentary against safety and welfare” I gotta think that either your account’s been hacked or your brain’s gone whacked.
