I am stuck there for a weekend. I have to get a long ride and run in that weekend. Any suggestions? Anyone heard of it? I can see 1,876 loops of a parking lot in my near future…
Hi,
Wow, there is tons of great riding nearby. I live up the street (~15 miles in San Luis Obispo)…I’m not so familiar with running in AG, but could offer some running routes if you think you’ll get to SLO.
The ride from AG out to Lopez Lake is pretty good. You could add some miles by riding out Huasna Road and back. You could add more miles by riding Orcutt Road in SLO. From SLO, you can go north on Hwy 1 which is decent. I ride up “the grade” on 101 quite often and there is awesome riding out past Santa Margarita. Once out near Lopez Lake, you could go out High Mountain Road…once it turns to dirt, turn around. I took my road bike all the way to Pozo one time…thought I could manage the dirt road on my road bike. I couldn’t…it sucked…beautiful views though.
Shoot me some questions if you like.
Cheers,
Matt
Take the 227 (Carpenter Canyon Road) into San Luis is pretty nice, cut over to Orcutt for some scenery and possibly hop onto Johnson Dr and take the HWY-1S towards the coast for some distance and hills.
Jumping on HWY 1N past Oceano and heading towads Lompoc isn’t bad either.
That’s right where Terry Davis puts on his Tinley’s toughest series of races. I went there the first year a long time ago, and I remember a great road that went to San Luis Obisbo from Lopez lake. It’s probably one of the ones these other people have mentioned. The riding and running out there will be spectatcular, and of course you can always swim in the lake there at Lopez…People pay big money to hang out and do training camps in places like that, enjoy it… It’s gonna be really hot there right now though, so early morniings might be in order…
Yep, 227 is just barely on the way to Lopez, Orcutt is the one right there heading into SLO.
Dude, you are not stuck, that is excellent riding country. The Tour of CA goes right through there.
Where are you staying?
Ok here goes. For a nice paved run go to Old Oak Park Road, between Oak park and Ormonde. When you hit Ormonde, hang a left and run to Price Canyon Road, turn around and come back. It’s a nice rural area that is woodsy and nice and cool. Of course you can run for miles on the beach starting at Pismo and heading south through the Oceano Dunes. The beach is pancake flat and packed down from vehicle traffic. Makes a great running surface.
Depending on where you are starting out in AG, there a numerous nice rides. All the routes mentioned above are great. In the same area my might want to catch Corbet Canyon Road. very scenic with tiny little wineries and vineyards. I can give you a few more depending on how log you are staying.
There is a health club at Oak park and James Way called Kennedy Club that has a nice 25 y outdoor pool that I think you can pay per visit.
For dinner head down to “The Village” which is their old main street area. Lots of nice restaurants there and a very cool ice cream place.
Poorly worded. I meant ‘stuck’ in the way that I am going there for a wedding, not necessarily the area.
Excellent advise/directions from everyone. Will probably try to ride in the heat seeing that I am training for IM Lou.
Damn, went from ‘damn, I have to go there for a wedding’ to ‘sweet, I am going there for a ride and a run and a swim and, I guess, I will mix in a wedding’
Thank you everyone. You made my day.
