Ride IM Courses on TrainerRoad or Wahoo Kickr? Anyone done it?

Just curious if anyone has figured out how to ride an Ironman course on TrainerRoad or Wahoo Kickr?

Yes, with http://www.bestbikesplit.com/ and the Trainer Road workout creator you can download the bike profiles and put them in to TR.

Their youtube video shows you how to do it as well some other helpful tips

.

I haven’t ridden the workout yet but I did create a custom workout in TR using a .mrc file of the course from bestbikesplit.com. I did that for IMLP to see what the course looked like relative to some of the workouts I’m doing in TR.

If someone has already created the file, can other trainerroad users find it?

Damn that’s cool. Created one this am, exactly what I’ve been looking for.

Probably can’t find it because it shows up in my custom workouts since I created the workout. Once they get the Team thing figured out better, you will likely be able to share workouts between the team that you have created.

You would have to find someone with similar bike set up and FTP as you for the share to make much sense. That said you can share rides through the trainerroad teams, and we have a few setup in the bestbikesplit team. If we make a list of popular races I can put some up for 3 or 4 FTP / IF target levels.

Also there are some gradient smoothing issues on courses that are really long and really hilly. I’m working on the logic as time allows

You can ride most of them on the Kickr via Cycleops’s VirtualTraining app. http://virtualtraining.cycleops.com/.

Can you use the Cycleops with a TV? I could always do the virtual routes on the Kindle Fire and I have an adapter already that mirrors the Kindle Fire onto the TV, looking tempting. But I can’t seem to be able to browse the courses available.

Yes, I put both IMCdA and IMMT through BBS and imported that into TrainerRoad. It gives me crazy hard workouts by doing that. The IMMT workout is 4:30 ride, 440 TSS and 1.0 IF. CdA was pretty similar. Pretty confident I can’t ride for 4:30 at 100%.

You need to adjust your target IF or np goal in bbs. So 75% maybe. If you just go with default it puts 100% ftp. Probably not ideal for IM cpurse

Can someone list the steps to do this for TrainerRoad?

Create the file with Best Bike Split then follow this

There were some good suggestions on this thread, but did you ever figure out how to actually pre-ride an IM course? My Kickr is being delivered this week, and I’m anxious to figure it out asap. I’m more interested in IMAZ, but the principle is the same.

I used the garmin course to best bike split uploaded to trainerroad as a custom course method. The real issue I have found with this is b/c you are using best bike split, the terrain doesn’t really show through this method. So if you are trying to ride 200 watts normalized power for the entire course, once you use it in TrainerRoad, it basically looks like a flat line. Granted, I haven’t actually ridden it yet, but it seems to be missing the fact that downhills you will likely go easier power and uphills you will go stronger power and some elevation change on the graph would be nice. So I’m not entirely convinced this is the way to go yet. Ideally, we would be able to upload a garmin output file into TrainerRoad and it uses the elevation profile and you control your own wattage throughout. That would be ideal!
so the short answer is no

Unless IMAZ is really that flat, not sure you did it right. I did this for IMCDA and the wattages reflect the profile, climbing around 280w, descending around 150w, with lots of changes between.

renolaw - that’s the one i tried to do with CDA too and my wattages on TR just show straight across from the best bike split. Maybe I did it incorrectly then?

I’m waiting for Sufferfest to bring out their Ironman course series. I want the girl making eggs on rollers to figure prominently…
