Ride from West to East coast. What route?

I may find myself with enough time on my hands to ride cross country from California to the East coast. Can anybody recommend routes or what time of the year to go? If I do it I will be riding solo, Sleeping in a tent most of the time and pulling a trailer with all of my gear, and with no real goals other than to enjoy myself.

Seriously, there is about a 50-50 chance of me doing this. Anybody with advice would be truly appreciated. So far I have nothing planned. I am in the earliest stages of deciding whether to do it. If you’ve done an epic ride like this what advice would you give to a guy with a screw loose enough to do this.

Well if you pull out of Oceanside, CA next June you will probably have a little company, at least for the first few miles:

he’s ridden cross-country before so I’m sure he has some ideas.

Read Bart Yasso’s book. He’s done it twice in 21 days, riding 120-ish miles per day and sending packages from motel to motel to have minimal luggage. He had only three weeks therefore the rush. I plan to do it, too. Maybe in two years.

I did it from the East to West 2 years ago. Here is a link to the route we took. Awesome experience.

We didn’t try to get across as fast as possible and did a lot of north/south riding as well.

How about following the old route-66?

I got great maps and route ideas here:
