I can’t decide between buying Reynolds Stratus DV race wheels and Zipp 404’s (tubular). I’ve head the Reynolds wheels may have issues staying trued, but they have have fewer spokes and are slightly lighter. Any input regarding reliability, good/bad experiences would be appreciated.
Reynolds are lighter because they are shallower. I believe it is 46mm for the Reynolds (I know it is less than 50mm) vs. 58mm for the Zipps. The Reynolds is like 1/2-way in between a 303 and 404, like a 353.5
The Reynolds are also just a standard (vs. toroidal) rim profile, which is a bit outdated, IMO. If you want a good, basic all carbon wheel, the HED Stinger 5.0’s are MUCH cheaper, although marginally heavier. The rim profile is very similar, with the HED’s being slightly deeper. The HED’s do have a higher spoke count.
The Zipps will be marginally faster than the Reynolds.
And I’ve heard the Reynolds run very true, but that is just 2nd hand, NOT personal experience.
On a side note, I have a pair of HED Stinger 5.0’s that I am selling if you are interested. Would probably be much cheaper than either of those alternatives, unless you have a sweet deal.
Kona Kid,
I have them both - but in Clincher Versions which alters the conversation somewhat.
For up and Down kind of racing - the Reynolds are superior. Lighter, stiffer. They handle better.
For flat racing - I like the Zipps. They roll better.
I think the Reynolds come truer but in my experience have a tendency to come out of true due to their lower spoke count.
Both great wheels - but it depends what you are doing with them.
