Rewarded myself - A new gun

For the last couple of years, all extra cash has gone to triathlon stuff, but there is nothing I can justify buying at this point that would make me faster or more comfortable, so I bought another gun.

First .357 Magnum. SP101 by Ruger. Solid, and loaded with .38s would be a good gun to get my wife to range with me. She hates autos, except my ruger .22 pistol. Plus it is a solid HD gun for when I’m away. But this is the first house I have lived in where I didn’t hear police sirens on a daily or every other day basis. So the chances of that being needed are slim, but hey, better to have one than not.

congrads, i got a new toy today also.
springfield 40 subcompact.
what part of phx did you move too???
if you ever venture down towards south mountain and would like to shoot lemme know.

Looks nice on the website. how long a barrel? Why Ruger vs Smith & Wesson. Do you not like SA/DA revolvers?

Three inch barrel Da/sa. And I’m in north phoenix just sour of desert
Ridge.

Well, like I told JSA, now that you have the .357, you need one of these to go with it.

Not a cowboy gun. But I do have a ruger old vaquero in .45 colt. Next one will be a lever gun. Problem is I want calibers to match so that means going with .45.

That sweet little Rossi is available in 45LC, too. If you’re a recoil sadomasochist, you can get a 454 Casull version that will also shoot 45LC for plinking.

I’ve shot some of these 260 grain deer stoppers at 1200 fps out of my vaquero. I even did it one handed a couple times. Not quite 454 casull power, but well within magnum range. A 260 grain .45 caliber bullet flying at that speed will take your head clean off. Not really useful for plinking or even self defense. I don’t know what the hell I’m going to do with the 38 rounds I have left.

If it is just a range toy and a gun for home defense, why didn’t you go with the GP100 with 6 in the cylinder instead of the SP101’s 5 shot capacity?

I bought one of these earlier this year: http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product4_750001_750051_785116_-1_757754_757752_757751_ProductDisplayErrorView_Y

Love. It.

But, this one is fun too. Picked it up about two months ago and added an Eotech red dot sight: http://www.atlanticfirearms.com/component/virtuemart/shipping-rifles/tavor-sar-flattop-16-5-barrel-flat-dark-earth-finish-detail.html?Itemid=0

I am pretty much finished buying firearms for now. I have all of the bases covered. ;-))

Greg

Yeah, the S&W 1911 E-series was my first handgun purchase. Still one of my all time favorite guns. Pretty much perfect in every way and a joy to shoot.

I was tempted by the Tavor, but, went with a FN FS2000 instead.

I’m not anti-gun or anything but if you can’t justify spending more money on triathlon stuff, you lack imagination.

+1, lol.

Shot a .357 once. A little too “snappy” for me but that looks like a nice gun.

Because I intend to carry it every now and then. It conceals almost as easily as my 642 38. Took it out today. One handed full magnums to the head at 7 yards and to the body at 20. Why didn’t I get one of these before.

No, I’m just practical. I guess I could get a power meter for the road bike I ride when I’m in Orlando on business. Or could buy another set of pedals. An edge 6. But forking out 2K for wheels that will make me a little faster are way out of the budget. I’ve bought all the cheap gains already. Just got to get the engine going faster.

Here is my latest. I’m really enjoying it.

That’s not a gun.
Now this is a gun!!!

I have the same gun, got it a few years back. I put a set of laser sight grips on it, nice little gun.
Reasonably accurate for a snubnose and it’s a snotty little beotch with 357’s in it. Put a birdshot
round in followed by 4 black talons and you’re ready to roll.
Enjoy

What are your thoughts on the LCR vs. 642? I’ve been tempted to pick up an LCR in .38 spl for carry and a GP100 in .357 for home, range, and trail/river.

They are both pretty tough to fire. I was looking to get my wife that, but it is almost as hard if not harder for some to fire than the 642. Firing double action only with such a short sight radius on a lightweight gun is no easy task. Once you learn to put the bullet where you want with those, you will have excellent trigger control. Both are more or less designed for point shooting a quickly approaching attacker. Interestingly, I’m more accurate with revolvers single handed. Just lose some speed with quick follow up shots.

Ballistics wise, the .38 with +P just edges out .380.

Plus the 642 makes a more effective club when you run out of bullets.

However, the LCR looks like it would be easier to conceal. I haven’t tried it, since I have only fired a friends. Don’t be fooled by the laser. While those are good for guns like that, the trigger control is what gets the bullet on point. I have watched people on ranges with the laser aim, pull the trigger and miss completely. You do get the benefit of seeing where your mistakes are with the laser though.

I just realized you were talking about the LCR revolver and not the LCP pistol (I confuse the two). Same all applies there, but since the polymer has less weight therefore increasing all of the above issues. But polymer takes the sting out of recoil, so some find it easier to shoot longer, not much though. It doesn’t make as much of an effective club.
