everywhere i turn, there is some influence of the 80’s. specifically in FASHION.
high waisted shorts and very short tops are going to be in full effect 2008 spring and summer. it is so strange, after having low riders, bell legs, for so long. canary yellow; hot pink; very bright colors with some mod style prints.
who ever though skinny jeans and high heels would make a raging comeback?
mark my words–one year from now the magazines will be chock full of shoulder pads and stir up pants. hair will become bigger; curlier hair will make a big return (already saw its return over the last few years, but expect it to really make a big showing now).
on one hand i’m ready–ready for flamboyance, ready for electric blue. but on the other…it gives me quite a flashback that i’m not ready for.
Members Only jackets, parachute pants, a couple of playboy pins in said jacket, a mullet (parted down the middle and feathered on the sides).
I do hope the light-hearted “party” mentality returns to the music. I have been riding high the past few years as most of the hairbands went for one, or two, last hoorahs.
I’m very short torsoed and very long-legged, so I’m definitely skipping the short tops and high-waisted pants. I’ve just really got to create the illusion that my hips are three inches lower than they really are, or it looks all out of proportion.
On the other hand, shoulder pads- yeah! I’m very broad-shouldered, and haven’t been able to find coats that fit for about five years now. Am looking forward to being able to find decent coats again, and having them be ready to go after I tear the shoulder pads out.
I really miss the music, and want to see that kind of pop and rock make a comeback. There’s got to be more of that kind of retro euro pop than just Franz Ferdinand and The Killers.
I just went to see “Balls of Fury” Pretty funny, and lots of Def Leppard in the soundtrack.
Will leather ties and keyboard ties be making a comeback? I vaguely remember wearing a white leather tie with a white summer blazer, along with lots of hair gel. Yikes.
i think skinny ties will absolutely make a comeback; within 2 years, some designers are doing them already. can you believe it?
also tiny, skinny belts for women. tuquoise patent leather, metallic, etc.
and flats; which people have been wearing for about 2 years already. now it’s going to be flat knee high boots as well.
when pants start to get pegged at the bottom though, that’s when i’ll flip out. or, when button up shirts are as long as the knees and a belt is to go around the waist with stir-up pants under neath. haven’t seen this yet…and hopefully we won’t, but who knows.
but i want to hear more about the miami vice guys. that shit cracks me up!
when pants start to get pegged at the bottom though, that’s when i’ll flip out.
really?
i’ve been waiting for that for years. if that happens, i’m going to stock up.
roll up the bottoms… i don’t wear my penny loafers much anymore, but i do have some high tops that i can wear loosely laced. and for the occasional 80s revival party, yes, i do still own a pair of those socks that bunch up.
I agree, the Miami Vice look for the men has some perks.
For me, polo shirts under a denim jacket, both with the collars flipped up; skin tight, pegged leg jeans and leg warmers! Oh, the hair… big flippy bangs all the way. I’m only 5’3", but in the 80’s I looked at least 5’6" because of my hair.
FLA Jill, I’m with you on the high-waisted pants. I think I will start stockpiling low-waisted flared leg jeans now. Plus, what a great incentive to not gain weight over the next few years if I have to rely on staying my current size to continue to wear the jeans I like.
If the cycle holds, then after the next few years, grunge will be back… I like flannel
I remember stonewashed denim jeans with matching jeans jackets, Gotcha pant with their name printed all the way down one leg, Genera, Genera Hypercolor, Z Cavaricci, Skidz, Vision Street Wear, ninja shoes, and checker printed Vans. As soon as parachute pants and friendship beads come back in style, we’ll know this 80’s thing is really out of hand.
Its no surprise. In 1987, no one thought bell bottoms and long straight hair would actually come back, but 10 years later …
I work in a high school and the girls dress almost just as they did 20 years ago, when I was in high school (except for the athlete and hip hop girls in baggy sweats and pajamas, a holdover from the 90s I guess). Their hair is not as bad as when I was in high school, though, and makeup not as thick … The preppy boys and goth kids (Now called emos) look about the same, but with fewer crew cuts … There are a few new variations, some cooler, some really silly, IMO.
Happily, tattoos and piercings seem to be on the decline … This 80s trend will decline soon, as its been on an upswing for 5 years. I guess we need to start preparing for the 90s again ??? Grunge? What else?
there is more of the 80’s to be seen–there is plenty more coming out; and not just for weird emos, it’s going adult and mainstream. don’t be surprised if you school secretary shows up in electric blue. kids are always on the forefront though, i agree.
grunge is certainly back in music; i’m older now and don’t understand what all the angst is about. lol.
But grunge was just a hybrid recycling of dirty hippydom and punk! I don’t think I’m ready to see flannels, hoodie tshirts, and combat boots just yet. They need to give it another decade before they bring that back.
Oh yes, Sonny Crocket. Linen suits in pastel shades. Silk t shirt or polo shirt. Loafers with no socks. Just the right amount of stubble and Ray Ban Wayfarers.
I hate the 80s, my wife loves the 80s… Well, i should say i hate the 80s fashion and most rock bands that were pur 80s bands. But then you have Miami Vice and everything seems all right
As long as white reebok sneakers with high socks doesnt come back I think we are OK.
White linen jacket, bright colored silky t shirt , jeans (probably Jordache, Sergio Valente or Gloria Vanderbilt) or light linen pants, loafers no socks… OMG was that a killer look. I went to a couple of high school events like that, always more likable than the guys with the hammer pants.
