Retro Pics! 1988 Coors Classic!

My wife and I were going through a bunch of our old pics this evening as she is getting ready to make a scrapbook of my 20 years in the military. As we were doing that, I saw these pics from the 1988 Coors Classic stage that ended in Squaw Valley, California. I was just finishing up navigator training at the time at Mather AFB (now closed) in Sacramento. We decided to drive up and check out the stage finish. It was a beautiful day up in the California mountains. Sorry for the crappy scanning of this, but I have an absolutely ancient scanner.

Well, I hope you all enjoyed this trip down memory lane!! Now that I’ve uploaded these, I think I’ll have to do a search on the internet and see if I can’t ID some more of these riders. It was pretty cool to be up there. I think the day before they had a crit in old town Sacramento.

Very cool!!! Isn’t that Alexi Grewal??

Awesome!!! is that Sean Penn on the podium in the Schwinn/Wheaties kit?

I seriously doubt it!! I think I will google that stage and see who those guys are, though…

Spot

Yep, that’s him riding for Team Crest.

Spot

Jeff Pierce on the podium I believe with the other two. ( tour de France final stage winner on the Champs)

Andy Hampsten in the leaders jersey.

Wasnt that the Final stage on teh old Morgal-Bismark road course outside Boulder.

Nope…this was a stage finish in Squaw Valley, California. The race moved on to Colorado after starting in California. There was a crit in old town Sacramento, a mountain stage to Squaw Valley, and then a crit in Reno before moving to Colorado, I think. This was the last Coors Classic ever run, IIRC.

Thanks for posting. Damn I miss the days when Schwinn made a good bike.

Yeah…I remember lusting after a Schwinn Peloton in a store in NC in the late '80s. I was amazed that it came stock with tubular rims…

Those are a GREAT addition to the thread!! thanks…

I always had a passion for the way it was back then.

Yep. That’s Doug Shapiro in the stars and stripes. I worked with Doug for several years at a software company a while back. He’s a great guy.

Wheaties/Schwinn guy looks like Doug Smith. He was on a Wheaties box at some point. I have a 1990 Paramount. I would love a 1988 or 1989 Paramount in Wheaties/Schwinn colors. I’d like an '85 or '86 in the Icy Hot colors as well.
