My wife and I were going through a bunch of our old pics this evening as she is getting ready to make a scrapbook of my 20 years in the military. As we were doing that, I saw these pics from the 1988 Coors Classic stage that ended in Squaw Valley, California. I was just finishing up navigator training at the time at Mather AFB (now closed) in Sacramento. We decided to drive up and check out the stage finish. It was a beautiful day up in the California mountains. Sorry for the crappy scanning of this, but I have an absolutely ancient scanner.
Top pic…Andy Hampsten and Jeff Pierce (I think) after the race
Middle pic…Alexi Grewal after the stage
Bottom pic…the podium…no clue as to the identity of the other two riders, I think that’s Jeff Pierce in the top spot
Top Pic: Andy Hampsten on the podium
Middle Pic: no clue
Bottom Pic: I think that’s Doug Shapiro in the stars and stripes jersey
Top Pic: Alexi Grewal after the race
Middle Pic: Grewal again during the stage
Bottom: Absolutely no clue.
Well, I hope you all enjoyed this trip down memory lane!! Now that I’ve uploaded these, I think I’ll have to do a search on the internet and see if I can’t ID some more of these riders. It was pretty cool to be up there. I think the day before they had a crit in old town Sacramento.
Nope…this was a stage finish in Squaw Valley, California. The race moved on to Colorado after starting in California. There was a crit in old town Sacramento, a mountain stage to Squaw Valley, and then a crit in Reno before moving to Colorado, I think. This was the last Coors Classic ever run, IIRC.
Wheaties/Schwinn guy looks like Doug Smith. He was on a Wheaties box at some point. I have a 1990 Paramount. I would love a 1988 or 1989 Paramount in Wheaties/Schwinn colors. I’d like an '85 or '86 in the Icy Hot colors as well.
