I’m going to get one of these shortly but danged if I know which one to go for. All the new ones seem to be very high on the forehead. My head does drop from time to time so leading on from Tom D’s comments about the better looking Rudy Project may not be the way to go. Julians got a LG prologue which still looks ok although is one of the older designs now. I can get one of the new specialized but this doesn’t look like it’s seen a wind tunnel. I want to get one for Tri’s but aside from looks alone where the hell do I start ? Any recommendations ?
Hey hey,
You’re in luck cos I did all the research only recently…
After much consideration, I bought a Limar Crono 05 one from Parkers International and it’s great.
I did a post on it with pictures here:
http://forum.slowtwitch.com/gforum.cgi?post=369094;search_string=Limar;#369094
It tested very well in the wind tunnel according to jasongk who has info from tests at MIT…the Specialized tested well too, from his indications just under the Limar, and it tested better than the LG’s…now if you wanna spend big bucks get the as yet un-tested UVEX FP 2 helmet (as worn by T-Mobile) which costs about €329 and is just out this month.

Now, if you can wait the Bell and Giro are due out in August/September ( I contacted head office in Ireland and that’s the estimate) and they tested best as you can imagine…but I’m sure it’s all marginal where we not-superhuman riders are concerned!!!
So, in summary, the UVEX if you have the cash or the Limar if you want to spend less. The Rudy Proyect looks crap in my opinion, the LAS looks like a light bulb on your head…my friend has one…
The Limar and the LG Prologue look very similar…although going by your photo’s it doesn’t look as bulky ?
I have it on good authority it tested better than the LG…you can buy it from Wiggle or from Parkers International as I did…
Gary tingley knows the LG’s well, why don’t you PM him and ask…I know he doesn’t rate the Prologue’s and thinks the other TT helmet they do is in fact better…
I would go for the Limar…Paolo Bettini had it in the Giro…for example…
Bettini used a Lazer according to the photo’s.
I got the wrong guy…okay, can’t rememebr the name…but I saw one of the more famous riders with it…you can see it here anyway on another guy:

.
Now that I re-read your post the only concern you should have with doing Tri’s in the Limar is that it’s a TT specific helmet and there are no vents on the front but rather the back so I wouldn’t use the Limar for Tri’s in the heat…
So, if you ask me I would definately go for the Specialized in this case as they are well ventilated…see it reviewed at the Pez web site:

You must be fast though, as if it were me I’d just wear my Giro Pneumo cos I’d melt in the heat over large distances in the sun…but then again I’m from Gibraltar and it’s hot down here…
I’m off to my LBS to try a few out. Things are cooler over here so I’d wear it for Tri’s. We still wear the sleeker aero fairings over here for TT’s.
Does anyone have any photos of the LG Chrono in use? It’s one of the more reasonably priced aero helmets out there. I’d like to see how high it fits and how long the fairing is compared to others. Also, any IMAZ racers use this helmet? How warm was your noggin’?
The specialized helmet has been in the wind tunnel- just no data reported.
helmets are selective- they will work differently on everyone- I once offered to loan my aero helmets to a friend who does wind tunnel testing and he declined to do the tests as the helmets will “behave” differently on each person wearing them with their position on the bike, so the results would be inconclusive. Dont go by looks alone however, as when I did testing in MITs wind tunnel back in 2000, we tested 3 helmets, a Troxel Ti Radius, a Rudy Project non-legal aero shell (like ullrich wore in 2003) and a regular Bell Phi Pro. Although the Rudy “looked” more aero with its tail sitting close to my back, the troxel was more aero. I have 3 troxells now but also the new rudy project because I am sponsored by them…needless to say, my Troxels all have Rudy decals on them just in case.
