I think it would probably give a skewed view of the pricier and trendier bikes, ignoring the budget bikes like the low end Felt or P1.
The Kona counts will give you a particular demographic so if you identified that demographic then your results would be valid for that group.
Could you extend those conclusions to all of Triathlon, probably not. I think you’d see a lot of variability depending on region. Europe may have a greater proportion of European brands, US races would have mostly North American brands.
I know that in my area you’ll see entire groups riding similar bikes based on what the LBS carries. Where I live it’s predominantly Cervélo but I live in downtown Toronto so that shouldn’t come as a suprise.
I think you’d find that outside of Kona that the bike variability goes up tremendously. I think for the study to have any use it would be interesting to look at the bike counts based on gender/age group and finishing times. I think you’d see a greater correlation of bike types and models along those lines.
