I’m seeing a lot of Republicans retire from Congress in the last couple of weeks.
My my state of Texas alone 4 have decided not to run for reelection, with 5 more from other states.
I have a lot of respect for Will Hurd who represents the district next to mine. He’s a bit of an anomaly in the party- black and speaks out against Trump. He won a tight race last year. I was disappointed to see he would not seek re-election.
This article from last week is out of date with the statistics, as another Republican Represent Ken Marchant added his name to the list this morning, but it offers some thoughts.
Do you know historically how many retirements are avg? especially during re-election years.
I don’t. My google-fu was weak prior to posting this question, because I was curious if some of the smart folks here could tell me if it was normal or higher than normal.
But these are retirements prior to the election in 2020- a Presidential election year.
It seems to me that many incumbents think the traditional Republican stronghold of Texas is going to be closer to purple in 2020.
It’s the same here in GA in terms of state turning purple. It’s really ATL (and couple other cities like Columbus) that are big blue metropolitan dots in a red state. Pretty soon these two or three blue dots get big enough (like a fucking tick) that they dictate things to the whole rest of the red state.

Well, if the majority of voters vote blue, it is not a red state.
Too early to tell and could be a couple of factors.
Texas has a very early date for candidates to register, that could explain why they are leading the retirement announcements
There was a wave of GOP officials who came in during a time when they felt that being a elected official shouldn’t be a career. They could be staying true to their word. That should be easy to prove or not based on who is doing the retirements.

Huh! Really? I’d no idea. I thought that if the vast majority of the State (by county) appeared Red–excepting the two or three blue metro blobs that that made the State Red. Now you’re telling me it’s based on a simple majority? Next you’ll be telling me the Electoral College was solely a slave thing and needs to be abolished as one of the last remnants of that racist institution?

Well, it appears red because that is a dumb way to look at the state. People vote, not trees.

So the next National election we’ll just look at the USA as one big blob and wait for the final # to come in. No need to see all the vast majority of the land mass is entirely RED with these blue clusters on a few metroplex areas on either coast–and few other areas (MS delta comes to mind)

I thought we were talking about GA?
But obviously you are against everyone’s vote counting equally.
At the end of the day, do you believe peoples votes in the same state should be counted equally.
Do you think that the will of the simple majority should be the law of the land?
What if the simple majority decide that they don’t want women or people of color to vote? Or should be taxed more?
You are correct there are dangers to majority rule. But the dangers to minority rule are even worse. With minority rule you also get rules like women and people of color not being able to vote. I would pick majority rule over the roll of the dice that in minority rule.
I’m thinking of that ad on TV about “That’s not how it works. That’s not how any of this works”
In positing that we’re constrained to (either/or) opposite of Majority Rule (true democracy) is Minority Rule you walk by the whole idea behind our Republic in your attempt to couch your argument in a manner designed to destroy our Republic
If that’s what you want just own it dude? Just outright say it. You want to get the USA out of a Republic and into something other than that.
