Replacing MacBook Pro keyboard

My son spilled water on his MBP and now the keyboard doesn’t work. The track pad work and it will work off an external keyboard but I’d like to get the computer keyboard working again. Anyone tried this or have a suggestion. I’ve read that the repair could cost as much as $800 and I’m not going to drop that amount of $$$

don’t know your exact model - so this may not be totally correct - but this is a great site for this type of thing - https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Pro+15-Inch+Core+Duo+Model+A1150+Keyboard+Replacement/484

$800?

I replaced the keyboard on my first generation MacBook(the white one) for about $60. I think they keyboard was about $45 and then I needed 2 specialized screwdivers at about $7 each. I used a yootoobes video tutorial and it took about 30 minutes.

Try OtherWorldComputing they rock fro Mac replacement stuff.

+1 on ifixit. Just replaced the graphics card on my 2007 imac yesterday. It was like digging to the center of the earth to get it out but I have video again. It was actually a piece of piss to do it (with the ifixit instructions).

I spilled Diet Pepsi on my Macbook Pro and the keyboard stopped working. I used a USB keyboard for about 6 months while trying to decide wether to get mine fixed. ( I was quoted $1200 at the Apple Store). The keyboard spontaneously started working again 6 months after the spill and I have had no problems since. That was four years ago. I have no idea why this happened but I sure was happy.

I have a pristine 2011 macbook pro that has a motherboard component failure (known problem for a 2011) and I already replaced it with a new computer.

The guy at Apple literally asked me if I ever took my computer out of the house because it is really like brand new because I’m extremely anal about my computers.

I’m planning on selling the thing on craigslist but if you want to buy it …ping me and I’ll set you up.

Thanks everyone, I am going to look into this in more detail. I like the idea of using a usb keyboard in the interim. I will update when this issue is resolved.

I went to the apple store and the price to repair is under $200.00.

That seems much more plausible than the $800 number I read earlier. I did mine for about $60ish buying a keyboard off ebay and doing the work myself. Given the price Apple charges for their stuff + the premium on their labor seems about right to me at $200. Glad it’s not as insane as you were thinking!
