Repacking/servicing hubs - how often and how much $$?

Hi -
How often do you repack/service your hubs? And, what (roughly) does it cost to have a hub cleaned and repacked at your LBS?
Thanks,
Tom

I’ve never had mine serviced by a shop, so who knows. I always do my own. Its very easy and requires only a few tools from Park Tools, cone wrenches. You should have a set of these anyway.

When you pull the hubs apart to service, go ahead and replace the ball bearings. These are really cheap at your local bike shop. Don’t use too much grease. if you service your hubs every 6-12 months you’ll not need excessive grease. Besides, more grease then is necessary will cause undue friction.

If you have sealed bearings ignore all the above and don’t bother servicing them : )

Thanks Paul.
The main thing I’m wondering is whether it’s worth getting a set of cone wrenches and doing it myself, or just leaving it to the LBS. Right now I think I’ll get the cone wrenches, it seems they cost about what it would cost to get a single hub repacked at the LBS.

All I can say is “yes” its worth it. I trust my bike to no one but me. I make all my own repairs, builds, rebuilds and maintenance. No one works on my bikes and does as good a job as me : )
