Any recommendations for shops that will let me rent a bike for the race? It’s pretty much the only logistic I need to be concerned with since my flight/stay will be free.
Posted late last night. BUmpity-bump for the sunshine crowd.
Hmmm. There are some good bicycle retailers in the bay area, I saw a beautiful shop in Sausalito but I can’t remember the name and that’s a shame because it was really very nice.
Whatever you get as a rental do a double check on it and take a good test ride before race day. There are some real roller coasters on that course so you want a dependable steed.
To Tom and anyone else, you DON’T think a shop WOULDN’T let rent me a bike to use for the race, right?
I somehow have this idea in my head that rentals would be up that weekend, supply might be lower, and shops would be more restrictive with what they send out the front door.
Tom, would it have been on the right at the end of the shops coming from the GG bridge? There is one there called Bob’s bikes.
JerseyQuaker, you might try Roaring mouse or Bob’s bikes in town.
Rent from Silicon Valley Cycling Center in San Jose.

They provide concierge bike services (including delivery to your hotel). They rent Look Carbon Bikes with Power Taps and Zipps.
All you bring is your shoes (they’ll even provide your helmet and pedals).
Call Karl there and tell him your needs and he’ll take care of you.
Seriously. It’s a no-brainer given their quality and customer service.
Cheers,

I believe they rent Fuji, either alum or carbon.
Hmmm. It was as you rolling into town, along that nice strip where all the pretty restaurants are along the water. I seem to recall they had a lot of nice cruiser bikes in the window in addition to high end road and triathlon.
Let me know and we can set you up with something. We have a demo fleet of both the Cervelo S2s or R3s that you could rent for Alcatraz. As an added bonus we always have a booth at the Alcatraz expo so you could just pick it up on site.
Ok. Very cool.
Thanks to everyone for the input.
I do recall an old double fronted shop with a central door which had a lot of Euro brands of bikes and mainly road kit but sold cruisers too. But that was on the left and a corner plot. Bob’s was a modern shop on the end in a complex of shops just before the cyclepath that edges the water.
Bob’s Bikes? Ha ha. You mean Mike’s Bikes.
The other shop is A Bicycle Odyssey. www.bicycleodyssey.com

Mike’s bikes, that’s it. I knew it was an alitertive name. What’s the name of the area that the one by the REI is? That was the one with the cute girl working there that liked my accent. Or so Katy said.
SOMA aka South of Market

.
Ah SOMA, thanks. As I discovered it has a lot of leather shops too!

Yes, you should come back for the Folsom Street Fair. It’s rather interesting.

I always worry when events or people are described as “interesting”!
If you do a Google search you can probably find some photo albums…
Thanks but no thanks!
Now Julian, didn’t we take good care of you when you were here?!?
